by Dan Roberts Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at 12:54 AM
outfarpress@saber.net 707 459-1760 PO Box 1162 Willits CA 95490

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files- broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Cuba, China, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,

The latest Shortwave Report (January 19) is up at the website

http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:55)

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, China Radio International, and the Voice of Russia.

From NETHERLANDS- US Sec of State Rice had some Arab leaders agree on the so-called "troop surge" in Iraq- but can she convince the Arab people that the US means well?- an expert on public diplomacy discusses Condi. Rafael Correa is the new president of Ecuador, the latest Leftist leader to rise to power in Latin America- an analysis of changes expected from this friend of Hugo Chavez.

From CUBA- A Viewpoint on Ecuador's new president Correa from a Latin American perspective. US troops have engaged in combat operations in the Philippines according to the group Focus On The Global South.

From CHINA- A leader of Al-Queda in the Philippines was killed in a battle with rebel troops. As the violence surged in Baghdad, the UN released new figures for the killed and wounded in Iraq in 2006, three times the number given by the Iraq government. New US Defense Secretary Gates is calling for increased troops in Afghanistan. China plans to continue its low birth rate policy from the 1970's. China says that 2007 will be a crucial year for opposing Taiwan independence.

From RUSSIA- A commentary on the role of the Korean Peninsula Energy Organization in frustrating N Korea in its plans for an agreed upon nuclear power plant. The execution of 2 of Saddam Hussein's associates has, as predicted, negatively affected the political process in Iraq, further radicalizing resistance forces.

There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on line at- http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-shortwaves

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek, available at http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.

This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org >

There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org >Freak Radio Santa Cruz  now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am and Saturday at 11am(PST)

The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from http://www.radio4all.net > or iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)

Check out the amazing streams at http://www.radicalradio.org >

And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio >

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)

--I have noticed that as soon as you have soldiers the story is called history. Before their arrival it is called myth, folktale, legend, fairy tale, oral poetry, ethnography. After the soldiers arrive, it is called history.
