a play from a Mexican wrestling match, Felipe Calderon ascended to
Mexico’s Presidency lucha libre style. In one corner, the odds on
favorites: El Fox, El Calderon and El Mexican Military’s top brass. And
in the other corner, the underdogs, members of the leftist Party of the
Democratic Revolution or PRD.
Members
of the PRD, whose candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, narrowly lost
the presidential election vowed not to let the inauguration in front of
the Mexican Congress take place. At the sound of the bell,
both sides came out swinging. El Fox and El Calderon predictably
entered the Arena, normally known as the Mexican Congress, through a
secret door in the rear. The fans jeered. Members of the PRD, who had
been hold up for days refusing to leave the ring, began pushing and
shoving trying to block “El Calderon” from reaching the podium. The
crowd cheered. But the tag team of El Fox, El Calderon and El Army was
too powerful for the leftist Democrats. And El Fox managed to hand off
the green, white and red presidential championship belt to the referee
who quickly handed it to El Calderon with ballet like precision. And El
Calderon was crowned champion of the United States of Mexico. He wore
the belt proudly for the world to see. The only thing missing was
Geraldo Rivera. So now Mexico has a new president, El Super Calderon |
