CALIFORNIA PROPOSIITONS: VOTERS BEWARE

The California 2006 General Election is less than three weeks away and most Californians are not prepared to make the big financial decisions that will be required of them on November 7, 2006. Californians will be going to the polls to vote on billions of dollars in tax packages and bonds that will be as important as buying a house or an automobile.

Californians are busy people, ready to buy a house in a few days, or an automobile in just two or three hours and these are the two largest investments most Americans will make in a lifetime.

The decisions Californians will make on Election Day are comparable to any such major investments. The bonds and tax packages are future financial decisions we are making for our children today because it will also be their responsibility to repay these debts.

Many consumers purchase automobiles every year and probably one in a thousand will read the entire contract; and probably one in a hundred will even glance at the reverse side of this important agreement. Most California will purchase a home and will never consult with a real estate attorney to understand the legal ramifications of their purchase agreement.

In the 80’s and 90’s car buyers would go to automobile dealerships looking for a good deal; once a tentative agreement had been reached on the “four square” it was time to meet the finance manager. Most often the finance manager would indicate to the customer the areas where a signature was required avoiding any detail explanations. In most cases customers left the dealership paying hundreds and even thousands in hidden fees.

Similar to the finance office at those dealerships, Californians are not ready to go into the voting booth; and the finance managers, representing the Democratic and Republican Parties, are career politicians and actors, that are trying to persuade millions to spend billions of dollars that we will be required to repay into the middle of this century.

Today voters need to beware when going to the polls to vote because much is at stake. Voters need to study the propositions and read their Official Voter Information Guide; and for those who will not, they need to vote no to spending their hard earn dollars and the future savings of our children. Voters should not be persuaded by expensive TV commercials because those commercials are more expensive than what we can realize.

When voters study the propositions for the November 7, 2006 General Election, its like reading the morning paper, read the articles and not just the headlines.
