Clear Channel
With nine stations under its control, Clear Channel is the largest owner of radio stations in Los Angeles. After the 1996 Telecommunications Act eliminated longstanding limits on radio ownership, Clear Channel gobbled up nearly 1,200 stations nationwide, including KBIG-FM 104.3, KFI-AM 640, KHHT-FM 92.3, KIIS-AM 850, KIIS-FM 102.7, KLAC-AM 570, KOST-FM 103.5, KXTA-AM 1150 , and KYSR-FM 98.7.
Viacom
In Los Angeles, Viacom owns the CBS affiliate KCBS-TV 2, the unaffiliated KCAL-TV 9 and seven radio stations. Viacom is one of the world’s largest media corporations and also owns Paramount Pictures, more than 15 cable TV networks, three radio companies, four publishing companies and various online holdings.
Tribune Co.
Nationwide, the Tribune Co. owns 30 TV stations and 26 newspapers -— including the Los Angeles Times, which it purchased in a 2000 takeover of Times Mirror. Tribune also owns the local Los Angeles CW affiliate, KTLA-TV 5, thanks to a waiver from the FCC.
General Electric/NBC
General Electric — owner of NBC and the Spanish-language Telemundo network — also operates the Los Angeles NBC affiliate, KNBC-TV 4, as well as two area Telemundo outlets. General Electric is one of the nation’s largest media corporations with 38 TV stations, Universal Pictures, Focus Features and much more.
Disney
Disney owns 10 TV stations in the United States, including KABC-TV 7 in Los Angeles. Disney also owns four radio stations in L.A. — and 72 radio stations nationwide. Disney’s other holdings include ABC, ESPN, the Disney Channel, Touchstone and Miramax production companies, Pixar Animation Studios, and its famous theme parks.
Univision
Univision is the largest Spanish-English television network in the United States, with 23 stations nationwide. In Los Angeles, it owns Telefutura’s affiliate, KWHY-TV 46, and its own affiliate station, KMEX-TV 34. Five of Univision's 47 radio stations are in Los Angeles.
News Corp.
News Corp. owns the UPN and FOX affiliate stations in Los Angeles, KCOP-TV 13 and KTTV-TV 11. These stations are two of the 37 owned by Rupert Murdoch's company nationwide. News Corp. also owns the FOX network, FOX News Channel, the New York Post, Weekly Standard and much more.
