journalist Christopher Hitchens will debate the causes and
consequences of the Iraq war at Baruch College in New York City.
Moderated by Amy Goodman.
George Galloway is Respect party MP for Bethnal Green and Bow in East
London. He recently electrified the United States with his appearance
at the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on May 17, when
he turned the proceedings into a condemnation of the war in Iraq.
CNN's Wolf Blitzer described Galloway's speech in the Senate as "a
blistering attack on U.S. senators rarely heard" in Washington. His
new book, out in September, is "Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington" (The
New Press).
Christopher Hitchens is a widely published polemicist and frequent
radio and TV commentator. He is the author of "A Long Short War," "Why
Orwell Matters," "The Trial of Henry Kissinger," and many other books.
The London Observer calls him "One of the most brilliant journalists
of our time."
This debate is part of a national tour of the United States by George
Galloway, "Stand Up and Be Counted: No to War and Occupation." The
tour will culminate in Washington, DC, during the anti-war protests on
September 24th. For a full list of cities and events, please see the

British MP George Galloway Speaks in Los Angeles to Demand Money for
Hurricane Katrina Relief, Not War in Iraq
Anti-war activists and members of the Arab community will join British
MP George Galloway at Immanuel Presbyterian Church {The views expressed
by the participants are not necessarily those of Immanuel Presbyterian
Church.}at 7pm on Thursday, September 22 to demand money and resources
for hurricane relief, not war. This event will accept donations to be
sent to New Orleans with a delegation from the Campus Anti-War Network.
Galloway blasted President Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina,
saying:
“The scenes from the stricken city almost defy belief. Many, many
thousands of people left to die in what is the richest, most powerful
country on earth.
In the most terrible way imaginable they show to the whole world that
it is not only the lives of people in Baghdad, Fallujah and Palestine
that Bush holds cheap. It is also his own citizens — the black and poor
people left behind with no food, water or shelter.
This is not simply manslaughter through incompetence, though the White
House’s incompetence abounds.
It is murder — for Bush was warned four years ago of the threat to
New Orleans, as surely as he was warned of the disaster that would come
of his war on Iraq.”
