PETER AND THE WOLF: Going Where the Bones Tell Them

Cult musicians with a completely strange take on touring

PETER AND THE WOLF: ...

04/09/05 - “We travel where the bones tell us,” said musician and occult enthusiast Henry Rutherford Jones of Peter and the Wolf in an interview Thursday.

Peter and the Wolf, that’s Rutherford and his wife Dana Jean, will search for coriedue (Cherokee energy fields) along their moonlit tour through the Midwest in April 2005.

They have admitted writing music in some very unconventional ways. The most bizarre example is a pagan ritual where they actually throw bones (rabbit, mostly) to conjure up the souls of Puritan families from the 17th century. Rutherford stands on strict morals, dressing in black, never being seen without his coat or hat. He keeps his wife covered, oddly like a traditional Puritan, bonnet and all.

“I ain’t in my time,” he told me “so I just listen to the howlin’ wind for the answers.”

While Peter and the Wolf have developed a cult reputation in central Texas as only performing at churches and graveyards, they will be clashing with the real world to play in slightly less obscure places this tour. Their first stop is Church of the Friendly Ghost (a favorite of strange and experimental musicians across America,) then they play Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, and an old theater called the Ragtag Cinemacafe in Columbia, Missouri. Their music and tour information can be found at www.whiskeyandapples.com.
