Nader speaks at Patriotic Hall
By Kara Nichols

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader spoke about his fight against what he calls corporate America's take over of the political system to about 200 students, community members and supporters at the Nader/Camejo 2004 Los Angeles Rally at Patriotic Hall Tuesday night.

"Because what we are trying to do is fight for justice," Nader said, "fight people who are pushed around and ripped off and denied health care, underpaid ignored, disrespected. Who cares about these other things? The struggle for justice must go all the time, must never be put on adjournment, never be sent on vacation."

Nader and his campaign call for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, health care for all and a living wage for full-time workers.

"There is no country in the world that cover all it people with health care that allows insurance companies to operate in the health care area," Nader said.

In addition to addressing these issues, he said citizens have let the two parties run away by being complacent.

Nader encouraged people to stand up and fight against corporate control of politics and the "corrupt" two-party system.

"No more," he said. "They've lost their nerve. They've allowed the corporations to take over the Democratic Party and they're not fighting to redeem control. They're saying anybody but Bush. leave Kerry alone, make no demands on him. If you don't make any demands on Kerry, the corporations will make their demands without any opposition in the opposite direction."

"Bush is the worst president," Nader said. "That does not mean Kerry is acceptable. They both flunk."

Nader, a write-in only candidate in California, said that ballot access is a significant problem today.

The Democrats have hired "Republican corporate law firms to file 17 phony lawsuits against us," Nader said.

The campaign has won nine out of the 11 Supreme Court appeals so far, he said.

Democrats have harassed our signature gatherers and used technicalities in state ballot access laws that have required us to spend a lot of money to defend the signatures needed to gain ballot access, he said.

He continues to campaign in order to connect with young people, generate discussion, fight for the causes of people and show framework for future political reform, Nader said.

Young people should support the Nader/Camejo campaign so that the military draft will not be reinstated, so they will have access to health care, so their jobs will not be outsourced, so they will not see their tuition cost continue to rise and so they will be able to smoke pot without being jailed, Nader said.

While Nader said that he does not support smoking or drinking in any way, no civilized society should lock up people who are reaching out for help, Nader said.

"I just feel like he does not get enough exposure," said Susan Bush, a sophomore majoring in music education who attended the event.

Noelle Said, a sophomore majoring in international relations who also attended, and Bush said that they knew the basics about his platform, but came out of curiosity and to learn more about the candidates.

"I think he is the most educated candidate out there right now," Said said.
