The SHORTWAVE REPORT 1/30/04 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

by Dan Roberts Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at 1:28 AM
outfarpress@saber.net 707 459-1760 PO Box 1162 Willits CA 95490

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.4MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Russia, China, Spain, and Cuba.

Dear Radio Friend,

The latest Shortwave Report (January 30) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.4MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.2MB) (29:03) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.

This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org

There are several other streams that work better-  http://www.freakradio.org  Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:30am (PST)

Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.radiolavalamp.org

streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.

And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice of Russia, China Radio International, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.

From Netherlands- Tony Blair started off the week with many wondering if he would remain Prime Minister as in this press review. It turns out that Tony survived his university fee increases, but by just 5 votes. Then when the Hutton report was released on the apparent suicide of David Kelly and the threat of Iraqi WMDs, Tony not only survived but watched the BBC take a whipping for questioning the government. The Colombian military continues exterminating rebel forces. Venezvualan President Chavez and Jimmy Carter have worked out an agreement on a referendum. While numerous countries are under pressure to abandon nuclear development, the US and others may have to themselves cease nuclear proliferation.

From Russia- 2 commentaries from the VOR. First, a review of David Kay’s statements about the unfound WMDs in Iraq. Then a synopsis of what the French newspaper “La Monde” wrote about the missing evidence and the war that continues to devastate Iraq.

From China- As violence escalates in Afghanistan, US officials admit that proposed elections will be postponed. The Chinese and French leaders are meeting in France, pledging a strategic partnership to insure global multilateralism.

From Spain- One of the missing puzzle pieces from the last story about the French and Chinese meeting, was the move France has made to renew weapons sales to China. The US will release up to 2 dozen prisoners from Guantanemo Bay. India and South America’s main trading bloc signed a free trade agreement. Robert Redford showed his new film about Che Guevara in Cuba.

From Cuba- In Japan protests against sending troops to Iraq continue. 9 Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops on Wednesday, including 5 who were executed point blank. 27 human rights activists went to trial in Columbus Georgia for their non-violent protests against the School of the Americas.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
