Los Angeles County Greens win Green Party of California Voter Registration Award

Los Angeles - Los Angeles County Greens gained the greatest number of

registrants of all California counties statewide in the Green Party of California

(GPCA) "Stand Up and Be Counted 2003 Registration Drive."  The honor was awarded

at the December Green Party of California State Plenary in Fullerton, CA.

"Many voters have discovered the Green Party and how our Ten Key Values

resonate with their own issues and ideals," said Lisa Taylor, Los Angeles Greens

Membership Coordinator.  "During our registration drive, Economic Justice,

Non-violence and Green Party Gubernatorial Candidate Camejo's campaign were some of

the most frequent topics of conversation.

The Green Party is the fastest growing political party in California with

more than165,000 registered statewide and 27,000 in Los Angeles county.  The

Green Party of Los Angeles County (GPLAC) realized a 7% growth in 2003.

During the Stand Up and Be Counted Registration Drive which lasted from

May-October 2003, Green Party chapters in Los Angeles County registered 2185 new

Green voters and hundreds to other parties.

"People understand the limitations of two-party politics and want alternative

candidates," said Joe Crompton, GPLAC Councilmember and co-founding member of

Hollywood/Silverlake Greens.  "The Green Party supports Instant Runoff Voting

which allows people to vote for their candidate of choice without risk of

spoiling the election."

Green Party members engaged voters at peace events, farmers' markets and

community festivals on issues such as opposition to the war, social justice,

fair wages, tax and electoral reform, universal single-payer healthcare and

other Green Party platform policies.

"By virtue of the numbers of people who registered Green, compared to other

parties," said Taylor, "We're confident that our registration efforts will

yield more Greens in public office."
