What To Do THIS Weekend

by M.T. Thursday, Oct. 02, 2003 at 5:39 AM

Only 4 days until the 3rd Green Reel Film Festival. Finally... a film fest that the masses can afford to attend!

press

"Plan Colombia: Cashing In on the Drug War Failure" (60 min) Gerard Ungerman, Audrey Brohy, dirs: The master documentarians who brought us The Hidden Wars of Desert Storm set their sites on the futile efforts to stem the drug trade in this incisive and brilliantly made film.
"Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election" (60 min) Joan Sekler, Richard Ray Perez, dirs. A powerful and eye-opening documentary surrounding BBC reporter Greg Palast’s drive to uncover the truth about electoral shenanigans in Florida and the undermining of American democracy.

Oct 4 and 5, 2003 - is the antidote to the constant beating of war-drums we are faced with every day in America, from our leaders and especially in our media. The Green Reel is Democracy in action: a true forum for ideas, and an opportunity for the otherwise stifled voices of progressive filmmakers from across the country and around the world to get their message across, whether regarding the environment, politics, LGBT issues, racism, and corporate power.

Selected Shorts by Mark Fiore throughout the festival!
"Who’s Paying the Price?" - 28min. Paper Tiger TV. The tragedy of 9/11/01 not only hit the victims of terrorism and their families: it left thousands of workers in the lurch. Their attempts at fair treatment are the focus of this fine documentary.
"Afghanistan: From Ground Zero to Ground Zero" - 52min. Jon Alpert, dir. The powerful story of a young Afghan-American woman who returns to her roots in Kandahar, post- 9/11, to see what has become of her family.
"Intimacy" - 34min. Joshua Townsend-Zellner and James Ridgley, dirs. A collection of very different couples speaks openly about their relationships, all in a blend of cutting edge philosophy, ancient Tantra secrets and homespun common sense.
"The Carlyle Connection" 60min. This intense look at the behind-the-scenes machinations of the wealthy power elite behind the White House explains a lot about our nation’s recent drive to war in the Middle East.

"Global Women’s Strike" (30 min) In March 2000, supporters in 65 countries around the globe took part in an effort to change the perception of "women’s work," from under-appreciated and unpaid labor to the grassroots-based power it is.

"Let Live" (15 min) Secluded by 300 miles of open ocean, Coco’s Island is a modern day Jurassic Park. A self contained rain forest and the world’s largest uninhabited island, Coco’s is also known for its schooling Hammerhead Sharks. However, these beautiful animals have a bounty on their head.
There are too many amazing films to list them all here.
