Its about oil" everyone always says. Tired old argument with statistics for AND against it. Just bear with me. The truth is so simple. It IS about oil, but indirectly. Even though the truth has been over-simplified for our benefit. The Global economy has had one rule that's lasted for decades and decades. Whatever the standard for trading oil, gives that particular currency a very strong grip on ALL international markets. So, for decades, Oil has been traded exclusively in US dollars. This gave the US an obvious monopoly, and over the years they've grown very attached to it. Here's where it gets interesting; several european countries (ie France, Germany,) get together and create the EURO-DOLLAR. This was a direct challenge to Uncle Sam's oil, but he wasn't worried. He'd been calling the shots for years and years.
WHY BAGHDAD BURNS:
Hussein switched his oil standard folks. This started the events that lead up to Invasion. Saddam was laughed at in 98-99 when he annouced he was switching to the euro-dollar to trade his oil. Laughed at especially by the americans, who claimed he was throwing away his country's economy. In 2001-02, Saddam was not only breaking even but profitting. Thumbing his nose at the outraged Uncle Sam, Hussein was the man responsible for giving the Euro a fighting chance against the US dollar. So now, the US have an actual contender for their global oil monopoly, on top of which, this breaks their strangle hold. Since they'd always been able to influence WHO was getting the fossil fuels. They lost their absolute power, now they've got to compete, AND their enemies are being supplied fairly along with the rest of the world again.
All, because of Saddam. Little mustached dork who actually managed to spit in the eye of the beast.
Sure, it seems like Saddam deserves what he got anyway, even if the media's given reasons for Invasion were gibberish nonsense.
Sure, Iraq deserves it ... if you condone the Tyranny of Uncle Sam over the last oh ... 50-60 years.
