Dogs for Democracy, an online group that began in the wake of the 2000 presidential election debacle, recently launched an anti-war division called Paws for Peace to address the growing threat of war.
The dogs and their humans will be sponsoring a dog contingent for the upcoming A.N.S.W.E.R. March Against War in Iraq which will take place in both Washington DC and San Francisco on October 26th, 2002. Thus far, there has only been organizing for the San Francisco march but since this is their first foray as a group, Paws for Peace expects that there will be, unfortunately, many more opportunities to make their presence known.
Billie, a 9 year-old Australian shepherd, began DFD along with a few other local Los Angeles dogs, out of the frustration that ensued during the Florida vote recounts of 2000. She has subsequently been a tireless canine activist against the Bush regime and has been on the front lines for many rallies and actions ever since. Regarding the upcoming anti-war marches, she says ?War is bad! And there may be humans out there that are angry or afraid and may have never marched against anything in their lives. We feel that the humanizing, or rather, canine-izing approach of having their dogs there with them on a march, might make it less stressful and free them up to express themselves without fear. After all, we are the heroes of the day after all the fine work our rescue brothers and sisters did after 9/11. The least we can do is try to stop what might be World War III?.
