Saturday, September 29th
11:39pm EST At around 7:30 pm, legal observers and a video crew went to a downtown hotel, where a Palestinian man had been informed by the FBI that agents were coming there for him within the hour, their reason and goal unspecified. Having been advised of his rights, and the encounter having been documented on video, the man refused to talk to the agents, and they were sent on their way.
6:01pm EST Events of the night: At 7 p.m. tonight, there will be a panel discussion, "Don't turn Tragedy into War," featuring Rev. Graylan Hagler (Plymouth Congregation UC Church), Kani Xulam (American Kurdish Information Network), Ashley Smith (International Socialist Organization). It will be held at All Souls Church, 16th and Harvard. There will also be an interfaith vigil at 7:45 at St. Aloysius Church, North Capitol and I Sts.
5:09pm EST The ACC Temporary Autonomous Zone is going on in Malcolm X Park. Right now, people are hanging out in small groups, sleeping, playing games -- it's basically a punk rock picnic -- and awaiting dinner around 5:30.
3:29pm EST THe International ANSWER march is marching down Pennsylvania and is currently at 10th and Pennsylvania. Bread and Puppet theater are doing puppet theater. Police have taken off their riot gear.
3:08pm EST Demonstrators at Freedom Plaza are going to begin marching from 13th and Penn towards the Capitol in a few minutes.
3:06pm EST At Freedom Plaza, there's a "mellow vibe" and an "energetic, happy" atmosphere, according to An IMC reporter. There are lots of signs and flags, and some big puppets. People are watching the speeches, pro-war demonstrators are standng on one corner talking with people one-on-one, and there is generally not much conflict. There are thousands of people at Freedom Plaza -- estimates range up to 10,000 -- but we do not have definite estimates.
2:39pm EST The rally at Freedom Plaza is going on right now; people are giving short speeches. Everything seems peaceful. The ACC demonstrators either joined up with the rally or went their own way safely. You can watch the rally live on C-Span.
1:27pm EST Both groups (the ACC and IAC) are together at Freedom Plaza, and the police has formed a perimeter around the demonstration.
1:20pm EST 14th and Penn: a small group of pro-war demonstrators chanted to anti-war demonstrators as the ACC and IAC met at Freedom Plaza
1:17pm EST The man who was knocked down had a head wound, and the medics got to him.
The ACC is approaching Freedom Plaza. One man was arrested when he tried to break through the polie lines.
1:11pm EST report from an IMC reporter: two ACC demonstrators have been arrested.
1:06pm EST The ACC was being escorted to Freedom Plaza, but they are stopped now.
Someone was hit by police and is on the ground. People around are calling for medics. People are also being pepper-sprayed.
12:44pm EST ACC update: The police have said that they will escort the demonstrators detained at 18th and Penn to Freedom Plaza (where the IAC march is) and there will be no arrests as long as no one deviates from the route.
12:42pm EST ACC numbers estimate from an IMC reporter: 500 cops, 500-1000 demonstrators.
12:41pm EST For those who have cable, the IAC rally is being broadcast on C-Span.
12:40pm EST 18th and Penn live report from Annette -- the police are gathering in force and have tear gas launchers out, so they can get to them very quickly. Their gas masks are still in their bags. Police are lining up in force. Things are "really getitng ready to happen" -- it's "not good". People on the inside are rather calm; they called a spokescouncil meeting inside and are just "hanging out."
12:25pm EST The International Action Center rally at Freedom Plaza is also surrounded by police. This rally has a permit.
12:09pm EST The Partnership for Social Justice is filing an emergency injunction to free themselves and the rest of the detained ACC demonstrators.
11:58am EST ACC march still trapped at 18th-19th and Pennsylvania. They are playing soccer.
11:53am EST According to one of the IAC organizers, the IAC is doing their planned demonstration at Freedom Plaza at noon. We also had reports of requests from the ACC for more supporters, but the IAC organizer said the IAC is currently continuing with their plan.
11:38am EST People who want to leave the ACC march are not allowed to. A GW student was caught in the protest and not allowed to go through the police lines back to her dorm.
11:31am EST 18th and H: the police have blocked off the ACC march, and it looks like they're trying to surround it. There are slightly less than 1000 people inside. Some people are trying to get to Freedom Plaza for another march, but they are not being allowed to leave.
11:19am EST The ACC march is being moved into Edward R. Murrow park at 19th and Pennsylvania. The park is surrounded by police and has a helicopter overhead.
11:18am EST The march was backed up against a fence. The police told the demonstrators to get over the fence, then to get back on the other side of the fence. This group of people -- mostly journalists -- are sandwiched between two lines of police, with a fence in between. They are not free to move. Lieutenant Sam McGuire is currently taking charge and telling police to let the group out of the cordon.
11:05am EST Someone was beat up by a cop, but we do not know why yet. (this was reported from the street to the audio number)
11:04am EST the ACC march is at the World Bank.
10:57am EST There was a scuffle involving a cop car, and an officer sprayed (possibly pepper spray) people around him.
10:55am EST The ACC march is going down H St. They tried to take a sudden turn onto 14th st, and the police stopped it by pushing people back onto H St. There is some aggression from the police, in terms of pushing people. Police Chief Ramsey refused to comment to an IMC reporter.
10:48am EST The ACC march is at H and New York. There are about 200 police, clad in riot gear, periodically trying to block the march with 10 cars and their physical bodies. At this point, there are an estimated 1000 demonstrators.
10:32am EST Police Chief Ramsey has offered to escort the march to the World Bank, provided they follow a certain route. The march is currently heading down New Jersey toward the World Bank.
10:25am EST The ACC march is at the 700 block of NJ Ave. NW; the march having been blocked by police, the ACC decided to march inthe other direction from the capitol. When police were blocking the march, some press were caught behind the police lines and not allowed through.
10:14am EST The police are blocking the ACC march -- they're lined up along the street and have blocked in the march at the intersection of New Jersey, C, and Louisiana.
9:56am EST The Anti-Capitalist Convergence march is still meeting at Union Station but is about ready to start the march. As of now, there are about 500 demonstrators there -- and about 2 cops for every demonstrator.
5:29am EST At 5:30am in Washington DC, breaking news is online to cover the direct actions, marches and protests this weekend against racism, war, the World Bank/IMF, globalization and capitalism!
