S29LA call to Stop U.S. Wars!

by Jamie Lee (Refuse & Resist!) Thursday, Sep. 27, 2001 at 12:18 AM
RandRLA@aol.com

As we mourn the loss of innocent lives here and around the world, we must continue to speak out and oppose the continuing and escalating plans of US military, political and economic interventions around the world and declare our intention to stand with all people in the struggle for justice and a better world!

NO TO U.S. MILITARY, POLITICAL & ECONOMIC INTERVENTION

IN LATIN AMERICA, THE CARIBBEAN & THE WORLD! STOP U.S. WARS!

The events of September 11 and the loss of thousands of innocent lives has caused millions of people to ask why people around the world hate the U.S. so much. In the past 2 years the anti-globalization protests around the world have hounded the IMF, World Bank and imperialists' summits and exposed the brutal impact of corporate globalization, adjustment policies, and trade agreements like the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on the lives of billions of people around the world, on the devastation to the environment and their enforcement with U.S. military weapons, troops and training of Third World troops at the U.S. School of the Americas. These protests have shined the light on why people around the world hate US government and corporations. In the wake of Sept. 11, the U.S. government has been beating the war drums even more loudly, whipping up anti-Arab and Muslim hysteria, clamping down further at the US borders and with plans to unleash more war against people around the world. As we mourn the loss of innocent lives here and around the world, we must continue to speak out and oppose the continuing and escalating plans of US military, political and economic interventions around the world and declare our intention to stand with all people in the struggle for justice and a better world!

AND WE SAY:

NO TO FTAA! The Free Trade for the Americas Agreement means expanding the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) throughout the Western Hemisphere. NAFTA has meant U.S. corporations gaining more control over businesses, land,

natural resources & the entire economy of Mexico with the backing of the U.S. government. U.S. owned maquiladoras (sweatshops) with no health, safety or environmental protections along the US-Mexico border has meant deadly working conditions for millions of peasants being drive off their land -- unable to compete with US subsidized corn, wheat and beans flooding their markets. Mexico's total debt burden increased by billion by 1998 from the first

year of NAFTA in 1994. FTAA means spreading more poverty, exploitation and environmental destruction to 31 more countries affecting billions of people!

NO TO SWEATSHOPPING THE HEMISPHERE!

NO TO PLAN COLOMBIA! Plan Colombia has been called the "Plan of Death" by the Colombian people. Plan Colombia means another .3 billion dollars from the U.S. to the Colombian government to fight the so-called "war on drugs." Plan Colombia calls for expanding the force of U.S. trainers & advisers, CIA agents, DEA agents, and spy planes, modeled after what the U.S. did in El Salvador and other Central American countries in the 1980s. The U.S. is acting as the overall director of the war, while the local reactionary armed forces are supposed to kill and die for U.S. interests. Plan Colombia means the spraying of deadly herbicides poisoning & killing the people, crops and soil in that region. This tactic is similar to the use of the poison Agent Orange in Vietnam during the 1960s and '70s. The Bush administration has requested an additional 2 million to expand this war throughout the Andes. Plan Colombia is aimed at suppressing the resistance of the people of Colombia to all these attacks on their lives and land.

STOP OPERATION GATEKEEPER! World Bank/IMF imposed structural reforms in Third World countries have uprooted hundreds of millions of people from their homelands. Every year over 1 million people from Mexico and Central America must choose between death by starvation in their homelands or dying of dehydration in the desert, freezing in the mountains or drowning in a river crossing as they enter the U.S. In 1994, Operation Gatekeeper was created as part of the US government's strategy aimed at blocking traditional border crossing routes - costing billion to extend the border wall and militarize it. Operation Gatekeeper has meant a 500% increase in deaths at the U.S. Mexico border - nearly 2,000 people! Last year, there was one death a day

during the entire border. STOP THE ATTACKS ON ALL IMMIGRANTS! NO SCAPEGOATING OF MIDDLE EASTERN PEOPLE!
