The Shortwave Report 9/14/01 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast upon notification. Broadcast and streaming files. Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Russia, Cuba.

The latest Shortwave Report (September 14) is up on the web at http://www.outfarpress.com/ in both broadcast quality (13.5MB/29:40) and streaming/quickdownload formats (3.4MB). It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you air it, please mention the website if you only use portions of it. The smaller file is not broadcast quality but adequate for just listening.

I spend Thursdays producing this program, using recordings ending Wednesday night. Thus I didn't find much about the horrible events in the East Coast that wasn't being said over and over on the US media. Unfortunately a lot of global activity is totally unreported at times like this. I did my best to balance the program.

This weeks show features Radio Netherlands, Radio Deutsche Welle, Spanish National Radio, the Voice of Russia, and Radio Havana Cuba.

From Netherlands- the death of the leader of the Taliban opposition last weekend sheds some light on the balance of power in Afghanistan.

From Germany- a european press review from Wednesday; Arafat expresses his horror over the NY attack but many in the East feel that it was a result of anti-Arab policies, his representitive discusses this; a Wednesday story saying bin Ladin has been placed under arrest with many associates; a comment on the terrorism by the head of the DW English service.

From Spain- a report aired Monday about US sanctions on groups in Columbia, and Chile is going ahead with a 0 million purchase of US fighter jets.

From Russia- a Monday story saying the British stock market had collapsed; a brief report on the Christian/Moslem war in Nigeria; a report on the US development of biological weapons.

From Cuba- Kissinger to be charged in US for conspiring to murder a Chilean; Star Wars plan is being questioned in light of Tuesday; Tuesday was the anniversary of Pinochet's coup in Chile; Supreme Court Justice says if another day of discussion had been available the Presidency would have been different; the NY War Resisters League urges Bush to not continue targetting civilians.

All this plus times and frequencies for listening globally at home. I hope you'll listen to this program and broadcast it if you are in that position. I'm still seeking a no-strings-attached funder. I'd love to here any comments you might have about any of this.
