Sunday, April 29th local citizen's marched to a toxic waste dump site in San Diego's Mission Bay Park that is the site of Sea World and their proposed expansion.
The 115-acre Mission Bay Landfill received an estimated 2.2 million gallons of liquidwastes from aerospace companies such as Convair, Rohr, Ryan, Solar and the US Navy. Wastes were dumped directly and in 55-gallon drums, into unlined sand pits dug below groundwater level. THe site has likely been leaking into nearby waters ever since. 68 of the US EPA's worst toxins have since been identified in wastes, soils and groundwater at the site. No cleanup has ever taken place. All levels of government have downplayed potential hazards at the landfill site, as part of the City's South Shores development project, an underground pocket of highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas was opened, and 8 WORKERS WERE EXPOSED AND HOSPITALIZED, 1 DIED.
