100 arrests today. N16 TABD. PHOTOS, audio, VIDEOS. Brutality in Cincinnati Ohio

N16 TABD. Many LINKS. TransAtlantic Business Dialogue protests in Cincinnati, Ohio, November 15-18, 2000. 100 Protesters Arrested today, Saturday, November 18. PHOTOS, audio, VIDEOS. Appropriate that Cincinnati is finishing up its months of "Pig Gig" celebrations. Cincinnati is historically known as "porkopolis" from its hog processing history. In the last 2 weeks 2 African-Americans have been killed by the police, one from asphyxiation during his arrest. A particularly brutal arrest of an N16-protester was similar in style. Beanbag shotgun rounds have been used indiscriminately. These rounds break car windows.

Please copy and distribute widely. Get solidarity for the 100 arrestees by passing this on widely. At this early stage there are varying reports on the number of arrests. But besides those taken in to the jail police have been detaining many people illegally and then letting them go after awhile. This is a standard Cincinnati police tactic. They did it recently for the people supporting the actors strike who were arrested actually doing civil disobedience against Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati. This tactic also was used at the Republican (R2K) and Democratic (D2K) national conventions in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Go to the archives of the IndyMedia sites for those cities.

Also, from many TV and IndyMedia reports the Cincinnati police during N16 stopped many groups of people on SIDEWALKS and made them wait around a long time until the police let them go. Many Cincinnati N16 protesters and bystanders were stopped and illegally frisked numerous times. One could call those arrests too. All this follows the R2K and D2K patterns, too. The R2K and D2K police  attempted to corral protestors in fenced-in protest pits.

Groups of people can legally walk on sidewalks without permits and without being searched. That is the law.

N16 TABD. 100 Protesters Arrested today, Saturday, November 18, 2000 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, "the land of the free." Cincinnati is finishing up its months of "Pig Gig" celebrations because Cincinnati is historically known as "porkopolis" from its hog slaughtering and processing history. But in the last 2 weeks 2 African-Americans have been killed by the police, one under suspicious circumstances, from asphyxiation during his arrest. A particularly brutal N16-protester arrest was similar in style to the arrest that killed the black man. Was the N16 training of the police the cause of both of these very violent arrests? And why was no medical help offered in a timely way by the police in both instances? There is much video footage of beanbag shotgun rounds being used indiscriminately against N16 protesters. These rounds hit with enough force to break car windows, and did so during the N16 protests. International journalists in Cincinnati have remarked on the disrespect by police of N16 protesters' rights in many ways. So the porkopolis moniker fits for many reasons. Article says "call the jail at 513-946-6100 and demand that all protesters be released unconditionally."

Sat Nov 18 22:00:36 2000 -- 100 Protesters Arrested Nov 18 2000 Chris Lugo.
http://ohiovalleyimc.org/cgi-bin/adisplay.pl?which=news/165

N16 Legal has just informed us at IMC that 100 Protesters have been arrested today. They are being held at Municipal County Jail 1000 Sycamoure in downtown Cincinnati. N16 Legal has asked that we call the jail at 513-946-6100 and demand that all protesters be released unconditionally. Reports have come across that protesters have been refused water , have had their charges changed as many as four times and even denied medication.

A vigil began tonight at 9pm at the courthouse and will continue through the evening to harrass the jail and express solidarity with the protesters.

One protester, Eliza Cohen, is being held on 0,000 bond and charged with two felonies.

A Legal fund has been set up to help get protesters out of jail. Funds can be sent to

N16 Legal 2352 Wheeler Cincinnati Ohio 45219

A permanent site will be set up on Monday for wiring funds for bail. Estimates are that bail needed to be raised for yesterdays arrests is about 00. Today it will probably be upwards of ,000.

Arraignment is set for Monday so protesters are probably being held through the weekend unless bailed out.

TABD Conference, Protests End Reported by: Valerie Miller, WCPO TV 9 (Scripps Howard)

Demonstrators held rallies at Fountain Square and along other streets in downtown against the Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue conference.

Protestors planning a peaceful demonstration found a police checkpoint at Fountain Square. Officers searched everyone.

The demonstrators were held behind barriers and police were everywhere.

Police arrested several protesters Saturday, and Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken said he was pleased with the police response.

The rally included a parade of pigs labeled for corporations. Protestors said business leaders gathering in downtown for the TABD conference are responsible for weak regulations.

"We lose environmental protection, worker safety protection, child protection," said Audrey Mayer of Covington.

From Fountain Square, protestors wanted to form a single file picket to drop off the pigs at several street corners. Police refused.

The group wanted to move around town and we weren't prepared for that," said Police Chief Tom Streicher. "We told them 'No'. If we are not prepared for it and there are no permits for it, it becomes a significant disruption in town."

The procession moved up Vine Street to the Kroger building for the second planned demonstration.

Along the way police were visible at every corner. Officers followed on foot and on horseback. After yesterday's few outbursts of vandalism and violence, police were keeping tight control.

The protestors took a seat outside Kroger headquarters. When the final pig was put in place outside the Chiquita building, the peaceful protest was over. The crowd was not ready to leave.

Officers arrested a total of 47 people Saturday evening for disorderly conduct after they refused to clear downtown streets. That brings the total of arrests this weekend to 56.

Police started taking people into custody a few hours after the group's 3-p.m. demonstration permit expired.

The protestors said they simply want to call attention to corporations' treatment of workers.

"We're fighting for everyone in the world. We're fighting for justice. We're fighting for peace," said one protestor. "They're so many people in the world
