Democratic Party of CA Passed Resolution for Peltier Clemency

by Leonard Peltier Defense Comittee Thursday, Aug. 03, 2000 at 10:13 PM

The Democratic Party of California passed a unanimous resolution in support of Executive Clemency for Leonard Peltier (text below).

Dear Peltier supporters,

The Democratic Party of California passed a unanimous resolution in support of Executive Clemency for Leonard Peltier (text below).

The resolution, introduced by the Marin Progressive Democrats, passed with overwhelming support, including the entire 550 California Democratic delegates to the National Democratic Convention.

This means we will have people on the inside of the convention and on the outside insisting that Leonard be released.

Please call the White House comment line and tell them about this resolution and its support among the democratic convention delegates. President Clinton needs to know that overwhelming support for Executive Clemency exists among his party, and if he grants clemency, he will not stand alone.

Let your Democratic Senators and Reps know too! The switch board # is: 202-224-3121

In Solidarity,

The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee

Where as: Leonard Peltier was originally convicted for murder of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

However, formerly withheld supporting Peltier's innocence would later force the prosecution to admit that they could not prove who actually killed the agents. Despite this, Peltier has remained in prison for 24 years. And

Where as: There is disturbing evidence of FBI misconduct in this case; that falsified affidavits were used to extradite Peltier from Canada; that ballistics tests were falsified and young witnesses were intimidated. Even the U.S. Attorney has admitted that no one knows who pulled the trigger that killed the two FBI agents.

Where as: Peltier a Native American activist has been a model prisoner for over 24 years, with no record of violence and has contributed to many humanitarian efforts from prisons. The seriousness of his deteriorating health could result in stroke, heart disease and kidney failure if not properly treated soon. His Parole Board recently d

Therefore be it Resolved: That the California State Democratic Party encourages President, William Jefferson Clinton to grant Leonard Peltier Executive Clemency as soon as possible.

Submitted by the Progressive Democrats of Marin.
