DESCRIPTION:
download PDF (65.5 kibibytes) Compassion & Choices is leading the campaign to expand end-of-life options in California by passing a law similar to Oregon?s Death with Dignity Act. In California, the ?End of Life Options Act? will ensure that medication that can end the dying process is available to terminally ill, mentally competent Californians who request it from their doctor.

Medical aid in dying is needed because:

? Too many suffer needlessly at the end of life;

? Too many endure unrelenting pain at the end of life;

? Too many turn to violent means at the end of life when medical aid could help them die peacefully.

On Saturday February 21st Americans United is proud to present Joe Barnes who will discuss the legislation and answer questions about the proposed law and how individuals can help support it.

?The time is right for California to advance the conversation about end-of-life options,? said Senate Majority Leader Bill Monning, who coauthored the bill with Senator Majority Whip Lois Wolk. ?We are working together to establish a process that honors a patient?s right to make informed decisions about dying and respects the individual?s beliefs after receiving a terminal prognosis. We will continue to meet with parties interested in this issue, and are committed to an open and inclusive dialogue as the legislation moves forward.?
