For those not familiar with this struggle, here is some background information:
In December 2009, Mr. Ramon Cortines-LAUSD SuperIntendent announced to the MEDIA that he would be closing John C. Fremont Senior High School, as of June 2010 & reopening it on July 2010, firing over 200 teachers & staff & forcing them to reapply for their jobs, claiming that this is meant to help weed out the \"bad teachers,\" yet these same bad teachers will be allowed to reapply and process nor criteria has been established to determine who the bad teachers are. Mr Cortines, is also trying to implement drastic changes to the school under the fake label of a \"restructuring\" process, implementing programs that have already been proved to fail. Mr Cortines is implementing these changes as an individual without presenting it for a vote to the school board nor to the community. Mr. Cortines is exercising his dictatorship under the umbrella of the No Child Left Behind Act, yet as of today Mr Cortines has not formally sent any written information to the Fremont Parents nor has he held a community meeting to inform the community of the changes he has planned. Mr Cortines posted a powerpoint on the LAUSD website as the \"Fremont Plan\" unfortunately, this document is in English, which parents & teachers were not informed about either and is inaccessible to the parents because our community is predominantly Spanish speaking and not technologically savvy.
When a parent questioned Mr. Balderas, the principal at Fremont, about the lack of access to crucial information and as to why Mr Balderas & Mr Cortines have not held a community forum and voting to involve more parents in this process, he became very upset at the questioning and only stated that they are \"working on it,\" yet it has been 3 months & the time is ticking and parents continue to be in the dark. When teachers from Fremont High put together the Save Fremont Committee in an effort to try to inform the community about what was going on at Fremont, they organized a meeting to be held at the school and after the permit had been paid for and approved it was pulled out and suddenly denied the day of the meeting, no explanations given, no refund of the money, no space for the community to meet. THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IN AN INFLUENTIAL neighborhood, but it happens in low-income and neglected communities like South LA.
We say: NO MORE!
Luckily a local church on 83rd & San Pedro, The Praises of Zion, opened its doors this day, and ever since to allow the community to meet at their establishment.
Students, parents, and teachers have been meeting consistently and walking the surrounding community around Fremont to inform people of what is taking place and to gather petition signatures, but we need more help. We need to ALL be united, all who care about our childrens education and future must come together.
Today it\'s Fremont, tomorrow it\'s YOUR school.
WE ARE ALL FREMONT!
