The "Potluck for Progressives" is a group organized

for the purpose of bringing together likeminded

people on a weekly basis to break bread and talk about

crucial issues affecting the community and the world.

At each meeting, people interested in peace, social

justice, labor, and the environment gather to exchange

ideas, talk about successes, plan actions, or just

engage in a friendly discussion with one another.

Bring a dish to share! Enjoy the bounty that others

bring as well! The potluck will start at 6:30 p.m. with

a speaker or film to follow at 7:30 p.m. Please join

us even if you can't bring any food!

On the Agenda:

Progressive Potluck

6:30 - 7:30 P.M.

Bring along your favorite dish of food,

chips, dips, or soft drinks, and spend

an hour mingling with progressive people

from all over Orange County.

Featured Film:

7:30 - 9:00 P.M.

We will be screening "The War on Democracy," a 2007

documentary film by John Pilger, an award-winning

Australian journalist, who takes a critical look at

the bloody history of U.S. intervention in Central

and South America as the people of these countries

struggle to free themselves from the economic,

cultural and military domination by their powerful

neighbor to the north.

"The War on Democracy" begins by quoting former

U.S. president George W. Bush as saying: "America

will not impose our own style of government on the

unwilling. Our goal instead is to help others find

their own voice." From there, Pilger tells the

story of how the U.S. has done -- and is doing --

the exact opposite of this in Venezuela, Chile,

Guatemala, Cuba, Bolivia and elsewhere.

Pilger takes us through the U.S.-backed attempted

2002 coup in Venezuela and actual 1973 coup in

Chile; the resistance of the people in Bolivia to

their country being asset-stripped by U.S.

corporations (symbolized by the privatization of

water). And he describes U.S. efforts to destroy

democracy in Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador

through torture, terrorism, and genocide.

Despite these setbacks, Pilger sees great hope in

the mass popular movements of ordinary people

rising up in Venezuela, Bolivia, and elsewhere.

"The American empire has reached its end,"

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez tells Pilger near

the end of the film,"and the world must now be

governed by the rule of law, of equality, of

justice, of fraternity."

Open Forum

9:00 - 9:30 P.M.

Open discussion, announcements,

and other news of interest.

The "Potluck for Progressives" is endorsed by the

Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist
