Lim(b)it, a new installation by Edith Abeyta on view May 17th ? June 27, 2003 Using 600 handkerchiefs, three miles of string, found photographs, candles, and a tree outside of the gallery, Abeyta calls attention to the incarcerated women who have defended themselves against their abusers. She examines this through the use of simple, common objects that act as symbols not only for the women behind bars but also the women murdered by their abusers, and the battered women who have survived. Commemorative objects resembling souvenirs have been created for viewers to offer their support with part of the proceeds benefiting Free Battered Women, a statewide grassroots coalition of activists, attorneys, therapists, students, community members, and other dedicated individuals who strive to end the re-victimization of battered women in prison.
