UE Local 1110 workers in Chicago at the Republic Windows and Doors plant last week took over the plant when owners declared, without the legal 70 day's notice, to close down the plant, fire the workers and refused to even grant workers' severance pay and other benefits owed them. The owners blame Bank of America for shutting off the company's credit.
Now, just today, according to the Chicago-Sun Times, the Bank of America, which has received 25 Billion dollars in bailout money has had the nerve to first offer to finance the factory, then, just a few hours ago, did an about face and took the offer off the table.
UE Organizer at the Chicago plant, Leah Fried, told an IAC member helping to build solidarity there that no matter what comes out of the negotiations, national solidarity demonstrations should proceed since the political issues are still the same in terms of demanding a bailout for the workers.
According to Sharon Black, who was told this information, UE rank and file in the plant are very strong and have vowed to keep up their occupation as long as it takes to win justice.
Let's show them that they have our full support and be out there TODAY at 4:30 pm in downtown Los Angeles!!
