GABRIELA Network Los Angeles and Mariposa Alliance To Commemorate International Human Rights Day
December 10, 2008 Los Angeles ? The anti-imperialist Philippine women's organization GABRIELA Network will host "Human Rites," an event featuring art and performances by progressive women artists to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UHDR). The event will begin at 7:00 pm at Imix Bookstore, which is located at 5052 Eagle Rock Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90041.
Featured performers include award-winning spoken word artists Alison de la Cruz and Faith Santilla, music by La Santa Cecilia, and will also feature live painting by Los Angeles-based visual artists Alfie Ebojo.
In an era where women's reproductive rights have come under attack in the United States; where women in high positions have been lauded as tokenized examples of so-called gender equality; where Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's regime has produced 107 murders and disappearances of women activists; and where slavery and trafficking of women and children the world over has experienced an upsurge, GABRIELA Network invites all freedom-loving people to commemorate International Human Rights Day with the intent to carry over the day's goals into our daily lives.
All members of the general public are encouraged to attend this night of women-powered art to honor the victories and sacrifices of women who fought and continue to fight for dignity and justice for all. A .00 donation is recommended, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
The rights of women are inseparable from the rights of humanity. There can be no such thing as human rights so long as one-half of the human population exist in a state of oppression and suppression. And indeed, the emancipation of women expands and deepens to a profound degree the liberation of all.
