GABNet Demands Macapagal-Arroyos End Squander of Philippine Money in Useless Suck-up Trips to the US

LOS ANGELES, CA: On Friday, November 21, 2008, 6 p.m., GABNet Los Angeles will stage a picket in front of the Sheraton Gateway Hotel, Los Angeles to protest the presence of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the US.

GABNet holds that these recurring trips of the de facto president are a sheer waste of Philippine resources. "These repeated Macapagal-Arroyo's trips to the US are nothing more than junkets," said Rebecca Dean, GABNet LA co-coordinator. "They waste the Filipino people's money and are occasions for embarassment and loss of dignity for all of Philippine ancestry."

"Her frenetic kowtowing or attempts to kowtow to US government officials embarrass the Filipino-American community," said interim GABNet chair Annalisa Enrile. "Worse, they derail our community's effort to have the US government address issues of social justice for the Fil-Am community."

Last year, Macapagal-Arroyo conferred the Philippines' highest awards to some congressional leaders in expectation of the passing of the Filipino Veterans Equity Bill. It did not.

This year, Macapagal-Arroyo repeatedly phoned President-eleet Barack Obama to try to meet; he did not respond. Of course NOT; meeting with a head of state, even a de facto one, would have been an insult to the sitting president of the U.S. Obama himself kept reminding everyone that the U.S. has only one president.

But Macapagal-Arroyo's stupid mendacity knows no bounds. Were she alone affected, that would be fine. Were her reputation the one solely damaged, that would be fine. Not that there's much of it left. But she drags the whole country and the whole nation with her, in this flurry of kowtowing and sucking up that it's simply infuriating.

And to add injury to insult, she uses the Filipino people's money to fund these useless trips of mendacity and colonial genuflection. It likely never even occurred to her that Barack Obama was a community organizer -- like 1,000 (with 93 women among them) she had had assassinated in the Philippines.

GABNet will picket Macapagal-Arroyo's presence in Los Angeles to underscore this truth: hey, Gloria, if you want to be recognized, acknowledged and respected by the world, do right by your people and your constituency!

- Stop the political persecution of dissenters!

- Stop the assassination of community leaders and community organizers.

- Stop shoving women and men into the international labor and sex markets.

- Stop pillaging the public treasury!

- Stop trying to prevent organized poor women from having a voice in government!

- Stop harassing and persecuting the Gabriela Women's Party!

But since you have neither will nor inclination to do any of this, why don't you just resign and spare the country and the people?

Join us and protest these suck-up trips of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo which wastes money earned by the people of the Philippines, by the millions of Filipinas earning 0 a month as domestic workers all over the world, by the hundreds of thousands of Filipinas funneled into the sex trade, by men and women of Philippine ancestry in the US who send the biggest share of the billion annual remittances to the archipelago.

She wastes your money!
