===========

(Los Angeles) On Thursday, August 7, the Eviction Defense Network (EDN) marks five years and five thousand clients served a year with Rock for Renter?s Rights, a blowout concert celebration. Five up-and-coming musicians - the Holloys, Mayaztek, Chango, We are Good Friends, Weba Garretson & Ralph Gorodetsky ? and more special guests will jam to support EDN?s legal, education and organizing work to defend affordable housing and renter?s rights.

?We?ve defended tenants in the courts, we?ve educated in the community, we?ve organized in the streets; now it?s time to rock at the Echo,? said Leah Simon-Weisberg, Co-Director of EDN. ?What better way to honor EDN?s supporters and keep our work alive??

Since August 2003, EDN has offered legal services to low-income clients, the majority of whom are immigrants, to defend them from eviction and unfair housing practices. No longer the new kid on the block, EDN now serves an average of 5,000 community members a year, providing at least 2,000 renters direct legal representation. EDN?s legal center in the Macarthur Park area stays open 6 days a week, staffed by bilingual case managers.

EDN?s work is now more important than ever. The housing crisis in Los Angeles County is forcing hundreds of renters out of their homes each month. Many desperate landlords are illegally increasing rents to make their mortgage payments. Banks assuming control of foreclosed properties often illegally evict clients upon taking over. In parts of the city, gentrification continues unabated, bringing more illegal evictions from landlords cashing in on skyrocketing rent or condo prices.

This is where EDN steps in: providing lowest-cost services to those who need it most. EDN also mobilizes tenants and communities to keep affordable housing alive, holding workshops to educate Los Angeles residents about tenant?s rights and organizing to preserve rent control.

Despite numerous victories ? like helping save rent control statewide in June, many challenges lie ahead. The organization will celebrate five years on August 7th with live music, spoken word, and much more. The show will feature numerous rising stars from the Los Angeles independent music world, including the Holloys and Mayaztek. All event proceeds will go to support EDN.

Cinco musicos jovenes y prometedores ?
