DESCRIPTION:
Tree-Sit Film Comes to Topanga

Topanga Greens will sponsor a screening of the film Tree-Sit: The Art of Resistance at the Topanga Community House, 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 pm.

Five years in the making, TREE-SIT tells the tale of activists taking to the trees in an effort to save the last of our old-growth redwoods from the chainsaw. Beautifully shot and edited with a powerful soundtrack, highlights of Tree-Sit include:

- The arrest of singer Bonnie Raitt for trespassing on timber company land and her duet with Joan Baez in a tree-sit

- Actor Woody Harrelson scaling the Golden Gate Bridge to hang a banner, and climbing up in Luna to visit Julia Butterfly Hill

- Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart leading a drum circle at a tree-sit support rally saying, "we're not just drumming, we're raising power"

- Rare footage of Judi Bari, organizer of Redwood Summer and victim of a car bombing for which she and partner Darryl Cherney were falsely blamed. Bari died in 1997 of breast cancer, but her daughters and Cherney won a .4 million judgement in a historic lawsuit against the FBI and Oakland police earlier this year.

Speaking at the event will be Susan Maloney of the Campaign for Old Growth, who staged a 52-day hunger strike on the steps of the Capitol building in Sacramento to hold Governor Davis to his pledge not to cut old-growth redwoods. Maloney's efforts resulted in hearings co-chaired by southern California congresswoman Shelia Kuehl and the introduction of the Maloney Resolution. Alsol expected to attend is John Quigley of recent "Old Glory" Tree Sit fame in Southern California.

James Ficklin, Tree-Sit's videographer, will also attend the screening with updates on the latest forest actions. Parents please note, the film contains some strong language (uttered by loggers towards protesters).
