A discussion and book-signing with Jonathan Kozol Standing Up, Speaking Out, Fighting Back in the Era of Privatization October 9th, 6:30pm, Immanuel Presbyterian Church (across from UTLA) 3300 Wilshire
This new book is urgently needed today to equip teachers, parents, and people who stand for equality in their fight against No Child Left Behind mandates, the grinding drive toward standardization and high-stakes tests, and the efforts- especially here in Los Angeles- to pry open the education 'market' and privatize the futures of our children. Private charters are winning historic victories here in Los Angeles.
Letters to a Young Teacher is a reflection on a lifetime of struggle for the idea that every child has the right to equal, integrated, quality education full of aesthetic merriment. We need a new civil rights movement, the author argues, to defend these ideas from the attacks that they are facing.
Come to a discussion about the fight for the right to educate all of our children equally- with hope, creativity, curiosity, joy, wonder, and critical inquiry. The new civil rights movement starts here.
Immanuel Presbyterian Church is at 3300 Wilshire Blvd, right across from UTLA, easily accessible off the Vermont and Wilshire Red Line stop. Parking for teachers will be provided at UTLA.
