"Labor Women" Presented by Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance & UCLA Asian Pacific Labor Alliance Monday, February 24th @ 6pm, Royce Hall 164 A new video collaboration by Asian Women United and film maker Renee Tajima-Pena (My America or Honk If You Love Buddha and Who Killed Vincent Chin? ) This half hour documentary revolves around the work and lives of three immigrant daughters (Quynh Nguyen, Karla Zombro, and Jun Chong) who are part of the new generation of Asian Americans transforming the labor movement in Los Angeles. Labor Women follows Nguyen, Zombro, and Chong as they wage campaigns for economic justice in diverse areas of the city. We get to know them--their personal histories and motivations for becoming activists. The three women are far from the young Asian Pacific American women you usually see in the media. They controvert the stereotypes of both the submissive Asian female of days past and the twenty-something, dot-commer version of the Model Minority today. This documentary is intended as an educational and organizing tool to: ***Inspire activism amoung young people, women, and immigrant labor communities ***Promote cross-cultural organizing ***Break stereotypes of Asian Pacific American women's passivity *Film screening followed by Q & A and discussion with API organizers and APALA (the only national organization of Asian Pacific Islander union members and labor activists)
