In 1972, she founded the first master's degree program in women's history in the United States She is a former president of the Organization of American Historians and the author of: The Creation of Patriarchy (1986), The Creation of Feminist Consciousness (1993), Why History Matters: Life and Thought (1997), and Fireweed: A Political Autobiography (Critical Perspectives on the Past) (2002).
