You are all invited on WEDNESDAY MARCH 5, 2003 to join Avalon Club at Saddleback College for a Teach in titled "Afghanistan as a Model for Iraq: The Rhetoric of Liberation" Presented by SONALI KOLHATKAR.

Sonali Kolhatkar is the Vice President of The Afghan Women's Mission, Host of The Morning Show on 90.7 KPFK, and a writer who has has written numerous published articles.

The 1 1/2 hour teach-in will look at the "War on Terrorism" that has been waged since 9/11 in Afghanistan, and the current target Iraq. It will look at how the goal of rooting out terrorism quickly turned into one of liberating the Afghan people from the Taliban. Once the hunt for Osama Bin Laden proved more difficult that the Bush Administration imagined, the traget quickly became Iraq. The U.S is now on the verge of launching a brutal war against the Iraqi people, once more to liberate them through bombs. Donald Rumsfeld, US Defense Secretary has hailed Afghanistan as a model for Iraq. What are the implications of this for the people of Iraq? How will this war effect the women of Iraq? and what does it mean to be liberate a people through war? Sonali will will attempt to answer these and more questions at the teach-in.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC & ALL CAMPUS CLUBS

DIRECTIONS:

1) Exit I-5 Freeway at CROWN VALLEY PARKWAY

2) Proceed EAST (LEFT) on Crown Valley Parkway a

3) Make a RIGHT on MEDICAL CENTER DRIVE

4) Stay on Medical Center Drive & it will bring you up across MARGUERITE PARKWAY and into the college entrance

5) Once inside the entrance proceed to parking meter where you will be able to purchase a parking permit from between (-5) or you pay park in designated "free" zones

6) You will need to make your way into the middle of the college campus and look for a large building titled SSC (Student Service Center)

7) After entering the SSC building, pass the double doors, go up the 2nd floor stairs at the top of the stairs, walk to the end of the hall and Room 225 will be on your left. It is right next to the cafeteria.

BIO. OF SONALI KOLHATKAR:

Up until very recently Sonali Kolhatkar worked as an Applications Developer at

the California Institute of Technology. She has undergraduate degrees in

Physics and Astronomy from the University of Texas and a Masters degree in

Astrophysics from the University of Hawaii. She now enjoys waking up before the

sun has risen to bring you two hours of news and analysis on KPFK's Morning

Show. Sonali is the host and co-producer of the Morning Show on KPFK Radio Los

Angeles 90.7 fm, a listener-sponsored community radio station, which is part of

the Pacifica network. The Morning Show airs from 7 am to 9 am weekdays (except

Fridays from 8 am to 9 am) and is a public affairs political news magazine.

Sonali Kolhatkar is also the Vice President of the Afghan Women's Mission, a

group that works in solidarity with Afghan women to help improve

health and educational facilities for Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The Afghan

Women's Mission recently helped open a free hospital in Pakistan for Afghan

women and children refugees. Sonali has spoken out about women's rights and

human rights in Afghanistan as well as the responsibility of the US to the

people of Afghanistan. Her piece entitled, "By Any Standards, This is a War

Against Afghans" was published as part of a series of essays in

"September 11th: Feminist Perspective", and online at www.zmag.org and

www.commondreams.org. Sonali's latest article entitled "The Impact of US

Intervention on Afghan Women's Rights" appears in the

Summer issue of the Berkeley Women's Law Journal. Sonali has been asked to

speak at many venues, commenting on current political affairs, from independent

media, to third party politics, and recently, the impending war

in Iraq. Sonali is also one half of "Love and Subversion", a Pasadena-based

music band, along with her husband, Jim Ingalls. She sings, paints,sews, cooks, and dabbles in web design.
