DEADLINE LOOMS ON THE TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND OPPORTUNITY

TO SAVE THE SOUTH CENTRAL FARM!

The 14-acre South Central Farm, located at 41st and Alameda Streets in South Los Angeles, is thought to be the largest community garden in the United States. After a contentious three-year land-use battle that made news around the world, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) intervened and secured an opportunity to save the South Central Farm. Within the confines of a tentative purchase agreement, TPL hopes to help unify stakeholders and the Los Angeles community to raise the funds necessary to purchase the land.

WHEN: Thursday, May 11th, 2006 @ 9:30 a.m.

WHO: South Central Farmers, TPL, Manuel Criollo ? Bus Riders Union, and other organizations

WHAT: Press Conference to Update on Fundraising Effort

Without the help of donors?both major and modest?the future of the South Central Farm is in doubt. The community of local urban farmers, TPL and other environmental, social service and community organizations need help now to save this important community asset and transform it into a multi-cultural neighborhood and regional resource built on the unique relationship between people and the land.

Only15 days remain to Save the Farm!

WHERE: South Central Farm

41st and Alameda

4000 S. Longbeach Ave

(Enter on 40th Pl. via Long Beach Ave.)

WHY: This is a unique opportunity to eliminate park poverty in this highly urbanized, blighted and semi-industrial neighborhood. The 14 acre site is a singular opportunity to make permanent and public the community and cultural benefits of the green oasis created by 360 families over the years as they continue to grow healthy fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants to supplement their food budgets. The 14 acre urban garden, once purchased, will remain open space for generations to come.

For info on this media event please contact Fernando Flores (909) 605-3136.
