Frequently Asked Questions

Will we be riding on streets?
Yes, we will be riding on city streets – critical mass style. This means we will stay together as a tight group of bicycles. When passing through intersections, we will cork the intersection to insure that we don’t get seperated. It will be as if we are a large bus, traveling togther through intersections. This is of questionable legality, but we consider it justified for our increased saftey. We will otherwise be obeying traffic laws and will stop for red lights if we have not yet entered an intersection.

How do I return to where I started?
Some of the ride leaders are leading round-trip rides which end where it started. Otherwise, you can bike back or take public transportation. The buses and metros allow for bikes to be transported. We will be providing information on how to take public transportation from any point along the ride back to any of the starting points. This will also be posted on the event page when available. From all points from Pasadena to Hollywood you can get on the metro for the return trip. For more information visit MTA.net

What should I bring on the ride?
Bring water, snacks, food, money for the bus or metro and a spare tube. Assistance with emergency bicycle repairs enroute will be available. Recommended: A Helmet (required by law for kids under 18 ). Optional: money for food and drinks, a map of Los Angeles, a sign for your bike or yourself, an MP3 player or CD to share songs with our rolling DJ and a noise maker (bell, megaphone, or ?).

Is there a route-map available?
The ride leaders will have extra copies of route map and directions. It may be posted on the event page later as well.

Will the group be riding fast?
We will be going at a relatively slow pace – about 7-10 miles per hour average. The ride is mostly flat or slightly downhill with an occassional small hill to climb. If you can’t keep up with 7-10 miles-per-hour you may consider riding with the slow-poke group (Stephen, cel 213-804-3800). The slow-poke group will start with the main group, but will split off when it gets behind the ride schedule.

Is bicycling dangerous?
”...a person who chooses a bicycle over an automobile for daily travel and who obeys the traffic laws and uses normal care and good judgement will experience greatly improved health and an increased
life expectancy as a result. Thus rather than being dangerous, cycling greatly reduces major health risks.” – kenkifer.com/bikepages/health/risks.htm
The risks you face faces may vary drastically depending on whether you follow simple safety procedures such as riding with the traffic and using lights at night. With that said, ride at your own risk.

Are kids welcome on the ride?
Yes, kids are welcome if accompanied by an adult. They should be a strong enough rider for the ride segment you will be joining. Children riding their own bicycles should be able to ride predictably in traffic. A trailer, tag-along or tandem are also options if you have it available.

What kind of bike do I need for this ride?
Any kind of bike is a great bike – beater bike, road bike, mountain bike, chopper bike – just make sure it is working order. If unsure, have a bike shop check your bike for you.

Will there be breaks during the ride?
There will be a 20-35 minute break at each stopping point on the ride schedule. The length of the break depends on the speed we travel. If we ride slower, the break will be shortened to keep us on schedule.

Will there be bathrooms along the way?
Yes, we will be making bathrooms stops along the way. Also, if you need to go, let the ride leader know.

How should I dress?
Wear whatever is appropriate for the weather. Street clothes are fine, or bike clothes if you’d like. Even better – dress up in an amusing outfit and decorate your bike and helmet. This will give the ride the atmosphere of a parade and cars will be entertained when we need to temporarily block an intersection as we pass through.

Will signs be provided?
We will have some extra signs availabe but not enough for everyone. Bring your own sign if you can. It can be a small poster board sign attached to your belt with duct tape, or a large flag , or a bamboo pole sign. Or, be creative and come up with your own idea.

Will there be music on this ride?
Someone will be bringing a sound system trailer the entire length of the ride. Bring your MP3 player or a CD to share a couple of your own favorite songs if you’d like.

Who’s organizing this ride?
This ride is organized by the Arlington West Memorial Ride team. A small group of local bike & peace advocates including some of those listed as ride leaders.
