In the SHU prisoners are kept in windowless cells 23.5 hours a day. All meals are eaten in the cell. There are no congregate activities of any kind, no educational programs, no work, and no contact visits.
The UN Convention against torture state that: any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining.... information or a confession, punishing him for an act he ... has committed or is sus[ected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him.... when such pain or suffering is infliceted by or at the instigation of or with the consent of or acquiescence of a public official is torture.
