KPFK is proud to celebrate three champions of social justice at KPFK’s HEROES OF HOPE CONCERT & BRUNCH honoring Ed Asner, Dolores Huerta, and John Paul DeJoria on Sunday February 4, 2018 at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. Tickets are available now starting at P/P by visiting http://www.kpfk.org ( https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3208744 ) This special event will pay tribute to our HEROES OF HOPE as well as raise awareness and funding needed for the sustainability of the KPFK and Pacifica networks—leaders in providing outlets for communities near and far, and catalysts in addressing social and political tensions through broadcast media. The show will kick off with the musical talents of singer/songwriter Keaton Simons along with Fernando Pullum’s Community Arts Center Youth Jazz Orchestra and Cameron Graves, pianist for Kamasi Washington, and a founding member of the West Coast Get Down collective. Ed Begley Jr. and KPFK personalities Margaret Prescod, Jimmy Dore, Lila Garrett, Betto Arcos, Ian Masters and others will also be participating. More special guests TBA. As part of KPFK’s ongoing efforts to acknowledge the extraordinary work of so many dedicated, determined people working for peace, equality, and social justice, the HEROES OF HOPE CONCERT & BRUNCH will honor some very special folks whose voices and vision have helped us move toward a more equitable and just society. ABOUT ED ASNER: Ed Asner is a television legend, well known for his role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and subsequent spin-off, Lou Grant. He is the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, having won seven. Ed Asner also made a name for himself as a trade unionist and a political activist. During his two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild (1981-1985), he was an outspoken critic of former SAG President Ronald Reagan, then the US president, for his policy in Central America. Ed’s book, The Grouchy Historian: An Old-Time Lefty Defends Our Constitution Against Right-Wing Hypocrites and Nutjobs with Ed Weinberger was released October 2017. ABOUT DOLORES HUERTA: Dolores Huerta is an activist and labor leader working to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers. To further her cause, she created the Agricultural Workers Association (AWA) in 1960 and co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta stepped down from the UFW in 1999, but she continues her efforts to improve the lives of workers, immigrants and women. The documentary film Dolores, directed by Peter Bratt, was released in 2017 to excellent reviews. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven, the film reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—at 87, she continues the fight to this day. ABOUT JOHN PAUL DEJORIA: John Paul DeJoria is a first-generation American, entrepreneur, philanthropist and pillar of the business community. He has struggled against the odds not only to achieve success, but also to share it. A modern day Robin Hood, John Paul lives by his motto: "Success unshared is failure." Born with nothing, at times homeless in LA, John Paul spent his early adulthood in and out of motorcycle gangs only to wheel and deal his way to the top of a vast hair and tequila empire. The son of immigrants, John Paul defies the stereotype of 'the 1%' and is the poster boy for the triple bottom line: people, planet and profit. In 2011, John Paul established JP's Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation as a hub for his charitable investments, which support the core values of his companies: sustainability, social responsibility and animal-friendliness. The documentary film Good Fortune, released in 2016, has been hailed as “the rags to riches tale of conscious capitalism pioneer John Paul Dejoria.” KPFK 90.7FM/PACIFICA RADIO is a non-profit radio station and network dedicated to providing programming that contributes to a lasting understanding between all nations and between the individuals of all races, creeds and colors. KPFK exists to gather and disseminate information on the causes of conflict between any and all groups and to promote the study of political and economic problems and of the causes of religious, philosophical and racial antagonisms.
