BTW: I know people who conduct those surveys for clearchannel. I know they're corrupt and self serving and I know for a fact he does not enjoy nearly 60% approval rating. The numbers they call are only people who they think agree with them. So more accurately your statement should read '68 (actually 61)% of the people we thought loved bush actually still support him'. In all reality he enjoys maybe 20% approval and about 30% 'tolerance'. Meaning about 1 out of 2 americans totally fucking hates him.

I could probably craft a little javascript to forcibly remove any comment signed by bush admirer. Unfortunately i don't have a mac to develop on so you mac users won't be able to use that. And javascript

runs kinda slow, especially for document rewriting on big docs.



I could make a php script to accomplish the same thing that would run much faster and universally, but would need somewhere to house it. The same script could remove the 'xxxxxxxxxxx....' crap i think BA also likes to do when he is totally without anything resembling an arguement.



Don't get me wrong, i'm not a big one for censorship but when was the last time BA said anything resembling an intelligent statement, or even a statement worth consideration. I've been haunting this place for months and i have yet to see a single statement by him that wasn't completely worthless.

yes, you're right, I agree. I am simply fed up with their bullshit. I have long held the ability to forcibly shut them the hell up and have refrained because it strikes me as fairly immoral. But damn if they don't make it fucking tempting sometimes.



For the record, I really do have a huge chip on my shoulder (seriously its like a fucking boulder), and I guess it looks like I have a huge ego too.. The reason i would disagree on that point though is that I'm not just talking shit, I'm completely capable of producing everything i've said. As for the peabrain... who knows, thats all relative anyways. I'm good with code though, that much is certain.



I don't presume to tell these people what to think, only that i wish they would try to produce conversation with *some* substance... Any substance, even if i don't agree with it, would be better than all this bullshit they keep flooding the board with. It makes it excessively annoying to hold a reasonable conversation, and because of that i feel it may deserve some questionable tactics to preserve the ability to use this board as the resource it was designed to be.



Anyways, your statement seems objective and i can't dispute it, I am acting a little childish i admit, but what are we to do here. The admin of the board seem very reluctant to take any measures to resist the subversion of their website, and i appreciate it enough to take proactive steps to preserve it.

And by fix I mean silence, effectively ignore, or forcibly remove the people that would render this site unusable. Am I referring to anyone that disagrees with me? Despite what fresca asserts, no, of course not. In fact, some of the people I am personally getting sick of would claim to be on the same side as I am (debate coach comes to mind).

The point is that after the first half a dozen comments on any given thread, the conversation usually degrades into this worthless tripe tossed back and forth.

So after much consideration this is what i've come up with:

I've nixxed the idea of javascript based functionality as it offers too much potential for error, and would be too labor intensive to be used effectively in the long run.

So PHP (or some other server side scripting language) comes to mind as the only logical solution. I will make a php script that will act as a 'MC' when viewing pages, and it will selectively hide/condense articles and comments you don't care to see. How will it know what you don't want to see? Two ways. Initially, you will manually click the 'hide this' link it will insert next to each comment and will no longer show that comment to you unless you use a special link at the top of the page to show you the hidden comments. That seems about as effecient as the task could be without eliminating control from the part of the user. The other option is to establish which users you trust, and then have what it shows you be a product of which articles they view. So say i decide to say I trust the opinion of Diogenes, Sheepdog, SF, and whoever else. Now say circlejerk decides to make a mess all over a thread. Say diogenes and sheepdog mark the comment as 'hide this', but sf hasn't been able to log in yet cause he's in timbuktu. If i have 'auto-hide' enabled, it will average the visibility for each trusted user into one number (ie, (1 + 1 + 0) / 3 = .66 = Hide it).

In this way, casual viewing combined with the proactive method (method #1) of hiding on the part of a few users will create a generally clutter free environment for all users to surf.

This will all be done on a remote server, none of the scripts i'm describing would be stored on la.imc's server. Unless they would like them to, in which case they can contact me and i'd be happy to make that happen.

This system would neccessitate user logins. There is simply no avoiding it, as much as I would like to as it makes the user feel a little more anonymous. It would work fine with proxies though.

Anyone, any suggestions or questions regarding?

I've considered the impact my proposition could have on your bandwidth usage (the only potentially negative side i could find to it), and with careful caching, I think bandwidth usage would actually lower a little bit. Perhaps RSS* could be implemented to use isolated news 'chunks' sans all formatting information. Would be more effecient and easier to parse. Either way is doable though.
