Raising Victor Vargas is a stellar debut from writer and director Peter Sollett, adapted from his Sundance award-winning short film Five Feet High & Rising.
Vargas stars newcomers Victor Rasuk, Judy Marte, Altagracia Guzman, Melonie Diaz, Kevin Rivera, Nino Rasuk, Donna Maldonado, Wilfree Vasquez, and Krystal Rodriguez
Synopsis (from SF Chronicle & SF Bay Guardian):
Victor Vargas is a Casanova from the Lower East Side who sets his sights on neighborhood hotty "Juicy Judy" (Judy Marte) and won't take no for an answer. Meanwhile Victor's innocent little brother (Silvestre Rasuk) and bitchy sister (Krystal Rodriguez) are going through their own adolescent mutations, and his overprotective Grandma (Altragracia Guzman) is convinced pseudoplaya Victor is dragging them all into sin, becoming the latest in a family line of hopeless "gigolos." Toeing a line between high comedy and near tragedy that's utterly natural throughout, Raising Victor Vargas is
an almost perfectly realized joy.
