In spite of the immense propaganda that was done on this film, I didn't see innovations in him.
The history was built in abyss. Actually this composition structure is a quite old literary resource. To build histories inside of other histories inside of other histories has been used from the Odyssey and of Iliad. Jorge Luis Borges was a master in the use of of this resource type.
The film is one amalgamates of psychological mazes inside of architectural mazes (or of architectural mazes inside of psychological mazes). The name of one of the feminine characters (Ariadne) it also sends the maze idea. The relationships among architecture, psyche and mazes are old as the myth of Theseus. Daedalus built a maze for Minotaur and it was arrested inside of him with his son Icarus. When fleeing of the maze Icarus it ends dead because the sun melts the wax that glued the feathers to his artificial wing. Many of Borges' narratives are mazes inside of mazes.
Paradox is another explicit and implicit reference in the film. The shared dreams some times belong to a character, other times belong the other character. In the end of the film it is the dream of a projection of the main character that it determines the result of every history, but we were without knowing this history is a real fact or just one more history dreamed by him.
The corridor's scene and of the elevator they are beautifu, but they don't get to be innovative. The scene of the city bending on herself and forming a maze, endless and without beginning, it is innovative and artistically interesting. The physical space that bends and she duplicate is an excellent metaphor of the psychic space that can make the same. The human beings were always capable to do this mentally (fact that is proven for the characteristics of the old Greek literature) in spite of the physics laws they have never stopped governing sovereigns.
A good film of entertainment, nothing else than this. We can consider it a pale tribute the work much more beautiful and more complex of Jorge Luis Borges.
