Voted today in West Hollywood Park around 11 am. Polling place was busy for that time of day but poll workers were very well prepared and lines were very short (average of less than one minute wait).
Poll workers reported that early morning voting was extremely busy with some waiting, but voters were patient and everyone got to vote. So, what you are looking at here is an operation that was prepared for exceptionally high voting during peak periods that was operating at non-peak levels at the time these pictures were taken.
Upon entering the polling place (a large auditorium in West Hollywood Park) I was directed to an information table and from there was assigned one of the five groups of tables arrayed around the perimeter of the room. This put me in a line with one person ahead of me, and I had my ballot and was in the booth less than three minutes after coming in the door.
I am hearing reports of problems in other areas on KPFK (90.7 FM, Los Angeles), including police shutting down a polling place in Redondo Beach, but wanted to give props to the West Hollywood election workers who were prepared and seemed to be doing a wonderful job.
I was told by the director of the polling place that pictures are allowed inside a polling place so long as you do not get close up to the polling booths themselves in a way that could reveal how someone voted. So, if you see polling places with problems, take some pictures and post them online, and make them available to 1-800-OUR-VOTE!
