PASADENA - Despite overwhelming community support for the embattled activist Jasmine "Abdullah" Richards, who rose to prominence as a youth organizer in the resource-deprived African-American community residing in otherwise-affluent Pasadena, a jury unanimously convicted her of the charge of "attempt to taking a person from police custody by means of a riot," a charge up until very recently known as felony lynching. At yesterday's court hearing, presiding Judge Elaine Lu sentenced the activist to 90 days in LA County jail, three years' probation, and a year of anger management classes. The the feared stayaway order from La Pintoresca Park, the hub of Black Lives Matter organizing in Pasadena, was averted. (image/jpeg)

The April 29, 2016 AT&T Shareholders meeting was attended by labor activists/shareholders of the Communications Workers of America District 9 of California. Despite efforts to silence the voices of labor and progressive shareholders, activists managed to engage top executives, including CEO and Chair Randall Stephenson. There was also discussion and considerable controversy over the ratification of Ernst & Young LLP as "independent" auditors and shareholder proposals for transparency in political donations and lobbying. IRVINE - In an unassuming classroom somewhere on the UCI campus, about 80 people, most of them students, gathered to hear the words of the recently-released Black Liberation Army prisoner Sekou Odinga, imprisoned for 33 years for his role in the 1979 emancipation of BLA soldier Assata Shakur.
<br><br>
Odinga is on tour speaking to students and community members, not only to tell his story, but also to encourage others to work to free US-held political prisoners and prisoners of war. This Wednesday's lecture was just one of a series that included colleges in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Santa Barbara, as well a presentation to the community at the South Central Library on Saturday.

The presentation on Wednesday was preceded by a video about political prisoners from the Black Liberation Struggle, and then some words from a professor.
