Marching with S.A.M.E. at the San Diego Pride Parade
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine
2011-07-19 4:19 PM
A lot of progressive Queers and Queer-friendly allies have written off the annual Pride events as overly commercial, corporate and mainstream. But that's not what it felt like to me when I marched with the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (S.A.M.E.) in San Diego's Pride Parade July 16. In a mixed contingent that also included members of the Bradley Manning Support Group and the International Socialist Organization, I felt like part of a movement, participating in an island of militant political awareness that asserted the values on which Pride was founded that have largely got lost in the overall celebration. With nine S.A.M.E. members facing criminal charges for seeking marriage licenses following the federal district court ruling declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional, some of the signs the contingent carried linked their members -- and Bradley Manning -- to notorious American political prisoners of the past. Rally Kicks Off San Diego Pride Events
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine
2011-07-19 1:21 PM
San Diego's Queer (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Pride events kicked off Friday, July 15 at a rally on the pride festival site in Balboa Park. The featured speakers were New Age author and credentialed minister Marianne Williamson, who talked about marriage equality as a straight supporter who has performed same-sex weddings, and Daniel Hernandez, the young, openly Gay aide to Congressmember Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) who saved her life when she was shot at an outdoor rally in January. But the most powerful speaker was former San Diego Democratic Club president Larry Baza, who powerfully expressed the history of the Queer rights movement and the challenges it faces in the future. The recent surge in racial violence hits Clovis
Rick Panna
2011-07-15 1:30 AM
A few weeks ago in Clovis, a young Native American woman was attacked by white supremacists. The police department seems to be doing nothing even though they reportedly have the license place number of the a car used by the attackers, and there has been no media coverage. According to a Department of Justice report (2005), "American Indians are more likely than people of other races to experience violence at the hands of someone of a different race." (image/gif)

Riverside New School & Medical Center to Remain Closed

2011-07-07 11:43 AM California Governor Jerry Brown has passed a new brutal austerity budget that reduces state spending by $15 billion, bringing it to its lowest level in 29 years. Among the casualties of these and previous cuts are a new high school and new hospital in Riverside, which were intended to relieve the disastrous overcrowding of the local school district and severe shortage of doctors for the region. Retenes 4 de julio 2011 / July 4 weekend checkpoints
Checkpoint response
2011-07-02 8:26 AM
Sigamos resistiendo.

Every July 4, the descendents of the settlers who appropriated these lands and the oppressed they have assimilated celebrate that conquest. They always seem to set up checkpoints around this time, too, as if to remind us who is not "American": the poor, the migrant, the latino/a, the African-American, the disabled, the young, the LGBT community. This violation of basic dignity, like all forms of conquest, is an attempt to place people into a category and, if possible, commodify them. Keep up the resistance.

OpineRegress: Matthew Yglesias' reactionary education policy pandering
Robert D. Skeels
2011-06-06 4:40 AM I've been following the exchange regarding education policy between Rachel Levy and Matthew Ygelsias online. Ygelsias is a well known supporter of reactionary corporate education reform, despite his reputation of progressive politics. In this essay we examine those contradictions and offer some possible reasons for Ygelsias' intransigence. (text/html)
