Opponents of Corrupt "Trade" Agreement Stage March, Rally July 7
About 200 opponents of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the so-called "trade" agreement that has been negotiated in secret between government and corporate representatives, marched on the Bayfront Hilton Hotel in San Diego July 7 during the most recent round of TPP talks. The march and rally finished a week of events protesting the secret negotiations of a corporate-welfare treaty under the guise of "free trade." (image/jpeg)

Community Activist Join Labor Against Phony "Trade" Deal
Progressive San Diego's official opposition to the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) — a NAFTA-like agreement seeking to subject the U.S. and a wide range of other countries to corporate dictatorship — began July 2 with a rally outside the Bayfront Hilton Hotel, where the TPP's negotiators are meeting. Speakers from labor, environmental, women's and Queer organizations explained what the TPP means to them and why it should be stopped. (image/jpeg)

Occupy the Military Industrial Complex (report back)
A series of demonstrations drew attention to one of the biggest (and least-discussed) welfare programs: the Military Industrial Complex. Although Boeing was the main target, demonstrations also occurred in front of Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. By late afternoon, there were about 50 participants. That number increased to approximately 75 by early evening. Most response from vehicular traffic seemed positive. (image/jpeg + 6 comments)

Public Advocate on Santa Barbara Homeless task force blasts diversion of moneys away from homeless, rape crisis and other vulnerable populations to other perhaps worthy causes outside of the mandate. This is what is called a usurpation or diversion issue, in social worker lingo, but means basically that those on the bottom of the barrel continue to be overlooked by "helpers", (text/plain + 2 comments)

text Rights of Bicyclists on U.S. Interstates in California and Beyond As Safe As Any Other Roads 2012-06-05 9:54 PM
Bicycles have the same rights to public roadways as do motor vehicles, and bicycles should be allowed anywhere on the U.S. interstate system if they so choose. Preventing bicyclists from using the interstate system safely and at their own discretion by issuing outrageous tickets ($200.00) violates the U.S. Constitution right to unrestricted travel. text No SNWA Pipeline! Let's Keep the SPRING in Spring Valley! Barbara Richardson 2012-06-05 9:32 PM
539 members of the Goshute tribe in western Utah are all that stand between the Southern Nevada Water Authority and a proposed multi-billion-dollar pipeline that would “pump billions of gallons of groundwater” from the Goshutes’ home in Spring Valley “to parched Las Vegas,” in a 92" wide pipe that would run for 300 miles. text Please Oh LA Times Get A San Diego Section—Please! Doug Kim 2012-06-04 8:03 PM
The U-T has never been, over the time I have lived in southern California, a terribly great paper—despite all the awards the news industry gives onto itself. Yet it is really the opinion pages at the U-T that suck (even with less news and staff). OK, given that the front page is now celebrity central as Hollywood Variety Magazine—that is a tabloid sensation for a cult of personality is questionable too. (text/plain)

Get wise, people! This Memorial Day weekend there will be numerous police checkpoints. In addition, there will be many saturation patrols, which are not listed here. Please be aware that the police always conduct more checkpoints than they announce through the media. If you see a checkpoint in your area, please alert your community as well as the checkpoint hotline at 909-992-0440. One more thing: it appears that many agencies are not respecting the law AB 353, which permits a driver whose only infraction is driving without a license (with the exception of suspended or revoked licenses) to call a licensed driver to retrieve the car prior to the conclusion of the checkpoint. This is your right, might you must demand that it be respected! If they do not honor your rights, we ask that you call the aforementioned number to report the abuse. Be careful, and keep up the resistance! (image/jpeg + 2 comments)

text FRACKIN' in Baldwin Hills to Earthquake US ? huh? scared silly 2012-05-18 1:45 PM
The news is coming out in LA too..FRACKING...the drilling into 'shale' with chemical polluted water [wasting water by more than bucketfulls, by more than waterfallfulls] is happening in our own back yard, but where ? not far from our LAX airport - in Baldwin Hills. Scientific evidence is IN - fracking [sounds similar to f--king of the evil not pleasant kind] is correlated to EARTHQUAKES and our San Andreas is complaining loudly that he wants to burst out again, not only to warn us, but destroy parts of us too. text Veteran Chicano activist's home raided by agencies Ernesto Arce 2012-05-17 3:25 PM
A veteran Los Angeles Chicano activist is speaking out today after what he says was a joint Sheriff’s Department and FBI raid on his Alhambra home on Tuesday morning. Carlos Montes is one of the original Brown Berets who was a key leader of the Chicano Power movement of the 1960’s and 1970s. He says his current activism in the immigrant rights and international workers solidarity movement has put him back in the crosshairs of federal agents. Montes was arrested in his home during a pre-dawn raid in which authorities confiscated countless photos, documents and even two kaffiyehs. He says the authorities have charged him with illegal possession of a firearm. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce visited Montes at his home today. He files this report from Los Angeles. (text/plain)

text Goshutes battle to save their sacred water from SNWA pipeline Stephen Dark (SLC City Weekly) 2012-05-16 9:32 PM
Elders of the Goshute Nation and many scientists agree that removal of aquifer water from eastern Nevada with the SNWA proposed pipeline for Las Vegas suburban development will destroy the spring fed ecosystems that the goshute have depended upon for their cultural and physical survival. Preparations for spiritual and mental battle to protect sacred Goshute water are beginning. (text/plain)
