text Seat Filling for the Stars: Sitting Pretty or Slave Labor? Charlotte Laws 2012-08-24 9:36 PM
I went undercover at a televised show called “Teachers Rock,” which was broadcast from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. I applied to be a seat filler with hopes of learning how this highly unusual profession works. Could this be the key to unemployment? Could filling seats fill bank accounts? It turned out the answer was no because the salary is zero. (text/plain + 2 comments)

Chris Hassett: Queer Activist, Teacher Tells Stories in Music
San Diego Queer folksinger Chris Hassett released his most recent CD, "This I Promise You," last May. It's a collection of 11 songs, mostly quiet and understated but with country, rock, pop and jazz influences reflecting Hassett's broad musical tastes. Zenger's Newsmagazine interviewed Hassett in late June and discussed the album, as well as gossiping about musicians ranging from Willard Robison to Lady Gaga. (image/jpeg)

The California Office of Traffic Safety just announced the agencies that will be receiving grants this year. Did your local agency or university receive a grant? Check the list on the website to find out: http://www.ots.ca.gov/Media_and_Research/Press_Room/2012/doc/2013_Grant_list_by_region.pdf

We at Checkpoint response have found out that not all the law enforcement agencies are following the AB 353 law like they should. (That is the law that permits drivers who get caught going through checkpoints without licenses to call a licensed driver to get the car.) If you go through a checkpoint, you must speak up in order to exercise your right, because the police are not informing people of their options. And if they do not allow you to call a licensed driver, please inform us or your local organization. Send an email to noretenes@gmail.com. (image/jpeg + 1 comment)

USA: Human Rights Activist Ordered to Six Months of Jail
The case of Ed Frey is reminiscent of an earlier Santa Cruz case where Sandy Loranger did time in jail for feeding the homeless soup. When the judge offered her counseling instead of jail Sandy Loranger replied, "If feeding my fellow man is a crime, I am beyond rehabilitation." (image/jpeg)

Another couple hundred people were en route to join us (having just demonstrated outside the police headquarters) but were barred by police (as organizers learned via cell phone communications). Pomona City Council Chooses Trash Over Residents
Monday, July 16, 2012

POMONA, California - A city council meeting to decide the fate of a proposed waste transfer station in the city's impoverished east end became contentious as various factions interacted at a pre-meeting rally. Warehouses, Workers & Wal-Mart
A group of workers for a warehouse that works exclusively for Wal-Mart invade the management offices with a list of demands that included crazy things like less dangerous conditions, hours that didn’t stretch from way before dark to way after dark, pay that met the legal definition of a wage and an end to global hunger (well, not really the last one—yet!).
