2009-12-07 5:21 PM 3+ years later, the humble farmers and people of San Salvador Atenco still resist the Mexican government's plans to place an airport over their sacred land, and demand release of their 12 political prisoners. Actions will take place at each of the Mexican consulates in Southern California area, and are times to coincide with International Human Rights Day to highlight the human rights abuses of political prisoners. Various Demonstrations were held in Southern California to protest Columbus Day, including one in San Juan Capistrano and another in Santa Barbara. The latter was organized by the Santa Barbara chapter of American Indian Movement and took place at the foot of Stern's Wharf. The turnout appeared to get as high as 35 (one person counted as many as 70), and there was a fair amount of positive reaction. (image/jpeg)

EAST LOS ANGELES--Thirty-nine years ago, a statewide series of demonstrations by Chicanos and Chicanas against the wars in Southeast Asia culminated in a police riot and the assassination of Los Angeles Times and KMEX journalist Rubén Salazar.
