May 1 through May 3 were days of action around the world, and May Day Strong organized over 1,000 protests in the U.S. In Montrose, the enthusiastic, lively crowd, estimated to have totaled over 120, occupied all four corners of the busy intersection at Honolulu and Ocean View. Participants on different sides of the intersection shared chants. Sometimes a chant started on one corner and finished on another. For example, corner 1 shouted: “The people united…” and corner 2 concluded: “...will never be divided!”

On at least five or six occasions Teslas drove by, and crowd members shouted: “Sell it! Sell it! Sell it!”

Signs addressed all manner of issues: human abductions, climate change, mismanagement of the economy, war, corruption, the future of democracy, police brutality….

The event was hosted by the weekly Montrose Peace Vigil, perhaps the only remaining weekly peace vigil in Greater L.A. It began as opposition to the Iraq invasion in 2006. It is now in its 20th year. Vigilers have been on the corner every week regardless of holidays, pandemics, or weather conditions. It occurs Fridays 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
