the Portland Indymedia website is the most unreliable remaining US indy website. http://portland.indymedia.org/
It's up and down more than a yo-yo on acid.
And that's not counting the conspiracy crap infesting the wire.
What gives?
The Portland Indymedia website is the most unreliable remaining US indy website. http://portland.indymedia.org/
It's up and down more than a yo-yo on acid.
And that's not counting the conspiracy crap infesting the wire.
What gives?
Recently the site was down for almost a month. When it returned, allegedly around Aug 11th, there was this explanation:
http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2015/01/428857.shtml
alternative media 11-Aug-2017 22:48
Hot Tech
We had some heat exhaustion on computers running the site that us down for a few days. It is all cool now. Weather blows, but we keep going.
-------------------------
I don't think that's how it works. Any competent tech person would have the computers in a temperature and moisture neutral place ALL THE TIME.
But hey maybe they can hammer this out at their meeting this Saturday:
Indymedia Events:
Usually held on 3rd Saturday of the month - (email PIMC to verify)
Next Meeting: 6:00 PM
Bipartisan Cafe 7901 SE Stark st.
General Meeting
Of course few people will know about it because as of this writing the wire is DOWN AGAIN.
http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/portland.indymedia.org
Is portland.indymedia.org down?
It's not just you! portland.indymedia.org looks down from here.
______________
They can't blame it on the weather now....
Maybe time to turn the sub domain over to someone who knows what they're doing.

I seem to recall having trouble getting to the site some months ago (maybe as long ago as June or even May).
I hope their problems are resolved soon. That site has good content, and there are still active contributers.

"as people have been posting in recent days."
If this is after a couple of weeks of down time(are the servers still hot? lol) this is almost certainly the mods/bees/owners trying to make things look lively.
It's down again and has been so a while. FFS if they're having this many problems why doesn't someone from the collective ask for some fucking help from the main Indymedia org? Otherwise its some bullshit to claim they're any kinda "news" wire.
If a corporate website pulled this shit NO ONE on indy would be giving them a pass.
Get your shit together or shut down. Or give it to someone who knows WTF they're doing.

Maybe instead of deleting/modding/disappearing comments some one should email Portland indymedia and ask who is in charge and WTF is going on.

The site is run by a single volunteer on a long outdated web-server. God forbid someone do pen-testing on it. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been taken down by malware yet. The site was more or less up for the last month but now is offline again.
Last Google cache of pages was later October to mid Nov.
I'd assumed someone had fronted the bill to fix whatever problems currently plague it, but guess not. They were just lucky..

I browse Portland indymedia semi regularly, but never noticed it was down alot. Or at least not for long. Most times I've checked it was up and if not back so soon I assumed it was a browser problem.
Too bad they don't have solid tech. Or more than one guy(!). Guess it shows indymedia is a dinosaur and everyone has moved on.

they're live again, but people are wondering what happened to the compost for 2017/2018
http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2018/02/435493.shtml
if they can't be bothered to actually run the site, they should kill it already. as the orange lunatic in the white house says: "sad".

Not just you. I check in on PIMC and it's a real 50/50 shot whether it will be up or down. As I type this (2/21/2018) it is snowing here in OR and the site is DOWN!
As for all the alt-right/Libertarian-Right/unverified conspiracy threads that frequently get published on there... that's another story.

The Portland indy wire has been down for several days now. With elections around the corner its strange keeping it up wasn't a priority. Maybe conspiracy loons in Oregon don't want anyone to find embarrassing stuff....

,,, got a steel grip on moderating any dissent.
For instance this comment remains unpublished:

@ Its A Conspeerasee
Ah, you think the website owner is commenting? Perfectly understandable...there is quite a bit of conspiracy crap on portland indy.
Lets rewind and remind the kids what IMC was supposed to be about: DIY open publishing tools, accessible and understandable for the average activist without needing a tech degree from MIT.
Now, in that spirit, some warm body working this newswire should be able to explain--sans tinfoil--the following:
1. why indymedia.org is down
2. why portland.indymedia.org is still active
It's not that difficult IF this is really a place of education/learning/open publishing/activist news.
OTOH if it's just some troll's personal blog, the "go-away-don't-ask-questions" attitude makes perfect sense.
@blues
Did you not read the analysis by a FOUNDER OF INDYMEDIA?
The lists are dead.
The global network is over.
Activists use personal blog and social media, using the IMC brand and claim you're "doing something". At least it'll keep you out of trouble.
"Workerbees please look"
LOL at bees plural.

Note: this also seems to be a subdomain that is operating in spite of the main domain being inactive.
Perhaps a rational person here will can explain without having a paranoid conniption fit.
