Env. and democratic activist Wangari Maathai became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, she capped a life full of firsts. She was the first African woman to earn a PH.D. in Eastern and Central Africa
In 1977 shocked at the environmental devastation caused by deforestation. Maathai founded the Green Belt Movment for 27 years GBM has enabled many people particularly woman to plant trees in their regions providing them with food and fuel.
