Oakland,Ca -- Late last week, details started to emerge regarding a law suit that involved a number of African American renters of Oakland being evicted, only to be quickly replaced by Spanish speaking immigrants being charged double the rents. A jury trial decided in favor of the African Americans who fought the evictions, and that it was the opinion of the jury that the evictions were discriminatory and unlawful.

On Tuesday March 26, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of HUD's one strike policy which leads to absurd results such as the eviction of innocent renters from Public Housing. In its zeal to further the cause of the war on drugs, an 8-0 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court declared that the Oakland Housing Authority had legal grounds to evict innocent renters for alleged drug related crimes they had not participated in nor had any knowledge of.

Just Cause Initiative--A Beacon of Hope

Oakland, Ca--During Mondays (June 10) record breaking blazing heat, over 100 anti-eviction activists and supporters from 20 different groups around the Bay Area showed up for an event at the Oakland City Hall to turn in over 36,000 collected signatures for an anti-eviction measure. The signatures collected on Petitions for a "just cause" evictions ordinance were delivered to the City Clerks Office, and next will go to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters Office for certification. Activists are confident that the initiative petition drive will qualify if the City Council takes action by July 31 to place it on the ballot for November.

Oakland renters acheived victory over greedy Oakland Landlords. Defeat at the polls leaves Oaklands ruling class to wonder why all their money could not win the hearts of the victims who have been exploited these many a year.
Oakland Ca--In a tight election bid to shift the balance of power in Oakland, Measure EE takes absolute power from the landlords who have been evicting to make a profit.
Oakland renters now have a defense against unfair evictions, and are making moves to consolidate their political gains for future political adventures.
The Rental Housing Association of Northern Alameda County spent over $500,000 to defeat the Oakland renters pushing for Measure EE, and calls made to Wanye Roland and Steve Edrington of RHANAC for a comment were responded by hang ups.
Despite Oaklanders being flooded with nasty mailers by RHANAC portraying the renters as sex offenders, drug addicts, and bikers who must be evicted, the best of Oakland stepped up to the polls to support the renters.

Oakland Ca-In a time of forced relocations of the poor out of Oakland, a little known group continues to forge it's way into the hearts and minds of Oakland renters. Campaign for Renters Rights, a small obscure group of dedicated volunteers have successfully been fighting against evictions out in the streets with interventions and direct action, rather than in the stuffy court rooms of a rigged system.
Case in point. Lorraine Key, a 73 year old Oakland resident recently faced eviction after 36 years residency in the same apartment unit, and decided to fight for her right to stay where she was. Ms. Key was sharp enough to hire attorneys of the Eviction Defense Center to help fight her battle and then she turned to the Campaign for Renters Rights (CRR), to take her battle to the streets. In short order, the landlord gave in and dropped the eviction after a few members of the CRR made contact with him. Case dismissed, and the eviction never made it to the courts. Ms. Key now is an active member of the CRR, helping others to fight their battles against greedy landlords.

Oaklands Elderly Under Attack By Greedy Landlords Taking Advantage Of Their Fragility.
ELDERLY RENTER FIGHTING ECONOMIC EVICTION
On Wednesday, September 4, activists, community members and renters shall meet 6:30p.m., at the Temescal Library (Telegraph & 52nd St) to discuss actions to defend Doris Stancil from an unlawful economic eviction.
Ms. Doris Stancil is an elderly disabled woman residing at 35 Monte Vista Ave, for over 10 years. A good tenant, Doris Stancil was one of many elderly renters who resided at the property when she first moved in to that location. Now, she is one of the last after the rest faced evictions.
During the past few months someone has been poisoning the outdoor plants of Ms. Stancil, and repeatedly calling her only to hang up when she answers the phone. She has never had heat in her apartment because Millar (landlord) fails to repair a leaking gas heater, and now being blacklisted by having an eviction on her record, it is a very grim situation.

San Francisco -- On Wednesday, December 20, 2006, tenants of the Rose Hotel held a press conference in front of San Francisco's City Hall, to announce the filing of a lawsuit against Mercy Housing California, due to serious infestations of mice, cockroaches, fleas, bedbugs, and other serious Housing Code violations, at the residential building they reside in.
The ten Plaintiffs of the Rose Hotel, including African-Americans, Caucasin, and Hispanics, spoke out against the slumlike conditions at their residential building in San Francisco, then filed suit against the nonprofit housing organization, as tourists from around the world flocked to the city for the festive holiday season.

Oakland--Last week, Oaklands Deputy Attorney General of Oaklands District Attorny's Office was Sued by a number of tenants/renters that allege that they were locked out of an 8 Unit Building owned by the Deputy Attorney General, Jerry Curtis. Some of the tenants/renters now are homeless.
The tenants/renters who resided at 3474 Boston Ave in Oakland, allege that they upset Jerry Curtis"The Deputy Attorney General" when they allowed theirselves to be interviewed for a story by local Channel 4 after a wind storm blew off the roof of the property owned by Mr.Curtis on October 22,2000. Allegedly,they were advised by Jerry Curtis not to do anymore news stories, and in anger allegedly Jerry Curtis retaliated against the tenants after the story was aired, and he locked the tenants out of their homes in the building he owned on Boston Ave in Oakland.

Tenants claims draw attention to notorius slumlord Richard E. Thomas
Oakland Ca--The Oakland City Attorney's Office has agreed to look into allegations that notorius landlord Richard E. Thomas has been conducting a racket to steal the security deposits from the renters of his numerous properties.
In a packed lobby of the City Attorney's Office it was announced that a meeting has been arranged for December 10, with Oaklands Mayor, District Attorney of Alameda County, and the City Attorney of Oakland to
meet with the victims of Richard E. Thomas. Despite a heavy Police presense, tenant activists and the victims of Richard E. Thomas refused to leave the packed lobby of the 6th floor City Attorney's Office until City Officials agreed to take some sort of action to protect future Oakland renters from the security deposit rent scams of slumlord Richard E. Thomas.
Before filling up 3 elevators to reach the City Attorney's Office on the 6th floor of Oakland City Hall, tenant activist's and victims of Thomas held a rally and testimony on the steps of City Hall calling out for justice from City Officials to take action and prosecute Thomas for his criminal activities.
One by one the victims of Thomas spoke to the crowd numbering about 30, asking why Thomas has been allowed to continue with his criminal enterprise known as Environment and Land Management Incorporated. To live in one of Thomas' buildings is like living in a mouse trap you can never leave from, because the needed security deposit to relocate is never returned to you, Joseph Johnson said.

Oakland - Last week, wealthy multi-millionaire landlord and "vexatious litigant," Richard Thomas, of Environment and Land Management, Inc., was whacked in the courts when a state appeals court upheld more than $3 million in punitive damages and attorney's fees after a jury found that he had ripped off and cheated around 200 tenants out of their security deposits, during 1999 through 2007.
The jury found that Thomas cheated the tenants out of their security deposits by fabricating false claims of property damage in his apartments. Thomas owns around 200 rental units in Alameda County, and most of the 186 or more class members involved in the lawsuit reside in properties that are located in Oakland.

Oakland -- Despite the arrest of Richard Singer for his involvement in offering to pay someone $65,000 to burn down the Menlo Hotel, illegal evictions are still taking place at the low-income residential hotel, in violation of Oakland's rent law known as Measure EE. Oakland -- Wealthy Tiburon man, Richard Earl Singer, appeared in federal court in Oakland on Friday Jan. 28, for a preliminary hearing / arraignment, after federal officials charged him with hiring an arsonist to burn down the low-income residential Menlo Hotel. Singer's Jan. 28 court date has been continued, and Singer is scheduled next to appear in court on Feb. 24, at 9:30a.m., in court room #4, at 1301 Clay St.
Federal officials have charged Singer with the solicitation of arson of a commercial building used in interstate commerce, and he faces 10 years in prison, and a $165,000 fine.

Oakland -- The term poverty pimps comes to mind when considering how the low-income tenants of Oakland have been exploited by some non profit housing organizations, that have been building their empires upon the backs of the poor.
The tenants of the California Hotel recently responded to threats of forced relocation by refusing to move after receiving a threatening notice stating that the hotel they reside in may shut down after July 15. In further response to threats of having their gas, water and electricity turned off at the hotel, the tenants responded by filing a $2.5 million lawsuit against Oakland Community Housing, Inc., John Stewart Company, CaHon Associates, Charles Folwkes, Greg Hyson, and Laura Sanborn. The tenants are being represented by attorneys John Murcko of Oakland, and Stephen Perelson of Mill Valley, and in recent days Alameda County Superior Court Judge Frank Roesch granted a Temporary Restraining Order to keep the owners of the California Hotel from turning off the gas, water and electricity.

Temporary Victory For Residents of The California Hotel

At around 4:30 pm on July 30th, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Keller handed a victory to the residents of the historic California Hotel by granting them another 30 days before ruling on whether or not they may continue to reside in their housing. A Temporary Restraining Order that went into effect a few weeks ago to stop the owners of the California Hotel from shutting off the gas, water and electricity will continue to remain in effect at least until August 27, when the next hearing will occur to decide the fate of the poor, elderly and disabled residents of the California Hotel.

Oakland - In a huge victory for the tenants of the California Hotel, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Richard Keller ruled on Oct. 29 to keep in place a temporary restraining order against Oakland Community Housing Inc. (OCHI), stopping the corrupt nonprofit housing developer from evicting the tenants or shutting off the gas, water and electricity at the historic hotel they reside in.
According to attorney John Murcko, “The judge appointed Anne Omura of the Eviction Defense Center as a trustee to operate the California Hotel for the court, with full powers to hire a management company to manage the hotel. Ms. Omura will be allowed to rent out all 150 rooms at the California Hotel, so that there will be enough of an income coming in to properly manage and maintain the building for the current 52 low-income renters still residing there after refusing to move when threatened with eviction.
“The tenants prevailed. There was no one from Oakland Community Housing appearing in court today to oppose the tenants’ needs or Judge Richard Keller’s ruling. This is a big victory for the people,” said Murcko.

Oakland red tagged buildings displace 200 residents

Oakland - Around 200 residents from 40 to 50 families in two residential buildings near 25th Ave and Foothill BLVD were given less than a 24 hour eviction notice, and were told that they had to move by 5pm, on Tuesday August 25.
The City of Oakland red tagged and condemned their residential buildings on Tuesday for major code violations that were discovered after a fire occurred in one of the buildings on Monday August 24. The owner (slumlord) of the two residential buildings passed away, and the City is trying to determine who currently owns the property.

Berkeley -- The plan to sell off Berkeley's 75 public housing units is harmful to Berkeley's poor, elderly, and disabled population that fail to qualify for the Section 8 program, or meet the minimum income requirements to reside in so-called affordable housing units owned and operated by local non profit housing developers.
Recently the public housing residents of Berkeley received a shocking notice dated October 27, 2009 announcing that the Berkeley Housing Authority (BHA) is preparing to convert their public housing units into privately owned housing subsidized by Section 8 voucher rental assistance, and that their housing would be transferred to a local non profit housing developer.

Oakland settles lawsuit against the Oakland Housing Authority

Oakland -- Around October 16, a settlement agreement was reached between the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) and the Oakland City Attorney's Office regarding a February 15, 2007 lawsuit, charging that 1,615 apartment units at 254 public housing sites were cited for code violations and unsafe living conditions.
In the settlement, the OHA agreed to respond to complaints within two business days, and agreed to inspect problem sites on a weekly basis. The OHA owns over 3,300 apartments, and is one of Oakland's largest landlords.
In addition, as recent as September 22, during a late night session in the crowded meeting room of the Oakland Housing Authority Commissioners Board Meeting, the OHA board members voted and unanimously passed the relocation plans for 3,885 low-income mostly African-American renters from Oakland's public housing.
In a separate vote that same evening, the OHA board members voted and passed the disposition plan, with one abstension and one board member missing. The vote allows the OHA to move forward on a plan to file an application with Housing and Urban Development (HUD), requesting permission to dispose of 1,615 public housing units to sell off to an unnamed affiliate of the OHA.

Oakland CA - A developer's recent glossy sales brochure paints the Coliseum Gardens housing development in East Oakland as being the next best thing, since chocolate milk. Being hailed as the most comprehensive development to date for one of Oakland's largest nonprofit housing developers, an indepth look beyond the hype and propaganda being used to measure the success of the project reveals that only 4 out of the 178 low-income families displaced by the development, actually managed to return to the newly rebuilt housing complex that was recently christened as Lion Creek Crossings.
Documents reveal that as an effort to reduce violence and drug trafficking within and around the Coliseum and Lockwood communities of Oakland, the HOPE VI program enabled the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) to use nearly $61 million in federal funding as a major Police Action designed to displace Oakland's low-income communities from the above mentioned locations.
These projects are only a small part of what is known as the Oakland Coliseum Redevelopment Area, which is approximately 11 square miles in size, extending from 22nd Ave., all the way to the San Leandro City limits, and is located between E. 14th St., and the Oakland Estuary/Airport.

A case of fraud and corruption in the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) took a new turn during the week of July 10, after Carolyn Wilson a former employee of the OHA who was arrested on July 6, and charged with 65 felony counts, declared that the 34 families facing eviction at Oakland's Lockwood Gardens were not aware of any wrong doing or irregularities while moving into their housing units.
From St. Tammany Parish Jail, Lousiana; "I want people to know that the 34 families facing eviction by the Oakland Housing Authority at Lockwood Gardens were not aware of any wrong doing on their part, while moving into their public housing units," said Carolyn Wilson.
Wilson was arrested in Covington, LA., while working at a service company called Protocol, by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Department. "The Police came into our company and contacted the manager, and then they called Ms. Wilson away from her desk and arrested her," said Protocol's Human Resource Director, Courtney Toledo.

Nearly 30 families face mass eviction by the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) from their public housing units on 65th Ave at Lockwood Gardens, a Hope Vl Project.
The Oakland Housing Authority is claiming that 29 families facing eviction from Lockwood Gardens, are Unlawful Occupants (squatters) who have illegally gained possesion of the housing units, and the OHA has served them 30 Day Forcible Detainer eviction notices in an effort to remove them.
On Friday April 28, the first 3 cases out of 29 eviction cases or more, landed in Alameda County Superior Court. Oakland's Eviction Defense Center has teamed up with Bob Salinas of Sundeen Salinas & Pyle, to file a Demurer in defense of the first 3 families facing Forcible Detainer eviction notices, by Oakland's public housing officials at Lockwood Gardens.
Lockwood Gardens has 372 units, is part of a revitalization project of east Oakland's public housing properties, and a partial recipient of $26,510,020 in grant funding from the Hope Vl program. The revitalization funds were divided between 3 public housing projects in 1994 and 1996, and renovations have since then taken place to demolish and rebuild the 3 locations into modern housing units, in Oakland's blighted east side neighborhoods.
The East Bay Community Law Center is also representing a number of the families facing eviction and those cases will head to court at a later date.
Currently, out of the 29 families facing eviction, the Eviction Defense Center (EDC) is representing 9 families in court, and the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is representing 12 families. One family has already been frightened into moving away from their public housing unit by the OHA, and that leaves a total of 21 families out of 29 facing eviction that have legal representation to defend their housing. No one seems to know if the remaining 7 families facing eviction have moved away or are seeking legal representation else where.

The people of Richmond CA., want to believe that their constitutional rights are upheld by the role of the courts, including the right of poor people to have access to a jury trial.
Instead, low-income tenants have found that their constitutional rights are being trampled upon in the Richmond courts, and people have united to speak out against such injustices.
Queen Jackson, a tenant defending her own eviction case, is not the first person to feel like she was taken for a ride by the courts of Richmond, after the judge stripped her of her right to a jury trial when it became apparrent that she was representing herself.
"I walked out of that courtroom feeling so small", said Queen Jackson. "I felt like the judge and the lawyer evicting me were friends. The whole thing was so unfair, but it happened so fast, and I did'nt know what to say. They really took advantage of me."

Oakland - Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite, has been an old saying, as far as saying's go, but some Oakland tenants have learned that this is more than just an old fable or mere folklore that has been passed down through the years.
"I've heard the old saying about bed bugs since I was a child, but I never knew they were real until moving here," said 47 year old Frank Benavidez. "The bed bugs are drinking my blood and eating me alive."
On Tuesday August 2 2005, 43 residential tenants of the historic landmark California Hotel in Oakland, filed a lawsuit at the Alameda County Superior Court House against Oakland Community Housing Inc, (OCHI), a non-profit housing developer.
Mostly occupied by elderly disabled African-Americans, each of the 43 tenants listed in the lawsuit are seeking $50,000 in damages over rat infestations, bed bugs, cock roaches and other health and safety issues.

Oakland non profit organization is sued for $2.5 million
Oakland -- Oakland Community Housing, Inc. (OCHI), an Oakland non profit housing organization was sued as recently as July 3 for $2.5 million in damages, for it's alleged involvement in the abuse of it's low-income tenants at the California Hotel, by forcing the tenants to live in slum-like conditions.
The suit also seeks a court injunction to stop the unlawful attempt by OCHI to force 75 tenants out of their housing at the California Hotel.
OCHI, their partners CaHon Associates, Inc., the John Stewart Company, and Greg Hyson the Vice President of the Telesis Corporation in Washington DC, are listed as defendants in the lawsuit among others.

Oakland - After pleading guilty on June 22 to one count of solicitation to commit arson, notorious Oakland hotel owner Richard Earl Singer, a wealthy Tiburon slum-lord millionaire, was sentenced to 27 months in prison earlier today for hiring someone to burn down his hotel. Singer was also fined $60,000 and upon release from prison will be on parole for three years.

By Lynda Carson -- After spending a small fortune on attorneys, consultants, a strategic plan to dispose of Berkeley's 75 public housing units, relocation specialists, several meetings with tenants opposed to the sale of their public housing, and several years of planning to privatize and sell Berkeley's public housing units, only around 1 or 2 persons representing developers appeared at a Berkeley Housing Authority (BHA) pre-proposal bidders conference, to express an interest in buying Berkeley's public housing units.
On the cool crisp damp morning of Wednesday, May 18, a group of public housing tenants and community activists appeared at a pre-proposal bidders conference being held downtown Berkeley in the Koret Boardroom, of the Ed Roberts Campus building, to say no to the plan to privatize Berkeley's 75 public housing units. The conference was originally designated for developers that have questions about the sale of Berkeley's 75 public housing units.

Berkeley -- The rebellion against the proposals to privatize public housing in Berkeley and elsewhere has spread like wild fire, as one or more members of the East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO) are waiting in the shadows to take ownership of Berkeley's 75 public housing units, if HUD approves of the privatization scheme.
Matthew Schwartz, the President of the non profit organization called California Housing Partnership Corporation (CHPC) supports a recent proposal by HUD to privatize our nations 1.2 million public housing units that is called PETRA, and is angered by those who are supportive of public housing.
CHPC has many clients in the so-called affordable housing industry including members of EBHO that stand to profit if public housing becomes privatized, and ownership of public housing units are transferred to the so-called non profit affordable housing developers.
Once an affordable housing developer takes control of an residential building, they milk the property dry by charging excessive fees, including administrative fees, management fees, maintenance fees, professional fees, wages, salaries and employee benefits, resulting in high rents and deferred maintenance at the properties until the developer can obtain a grant, or loans to do major repairs.

San Francisco - On March 2, 2011, San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi announced that surveillance videos from the Henry Hotel reveals that San Francisco Police Department narcotics officers falsified police reports in order to justify searching residences without warrants or consent, at the low-income residential hotel.
According to the Public Defenders Office, the damning video footage from two separate drug arrests made at the Henry Hotel, a 132 unit, 7 story low-income and homeless resource residential hotel built in 1912, stand in direct contradiction to police reports which were signed by officers under penalty of perjury.

Oakland -- The word has spread quickly during the past few days throughout the East Bay Tenant's Bar Association, the San Francisco Tenant's Bar Association, the Eviction Defense Center in Oakland, Legal Aid of Alameda County, and the East Bay Community Law Center in Berkeley, that the higher courts of California recognize that Section 8 renters are protected by local just cause ordinances, when landlords try to opt out of the Section 8 voucher program.
On April 12, 2012, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County ruled that Section 8 renters in the City of Los Angeles are protected by just cause eviction protections when landlords attempt to opt out of the Section 8 voucher program (Housing Choice Voucher Program). Landlords may not opt out of the Section 8 voucher program in eviction control jurisdictions, for the wrong reasons.

A family of Section 8 landlords, Riaz, Maryam and Mark Patras of Antioch, who have rented several homes to Section 8 families, are suing the City of Antioch and five members of its Police Department in federal court for civil rights violations, including loss of rental income, emotional distress, humiliation and loss of privacy. They are also alleging that the police department’s Community Action Team (CAT) used rough and illegal tactics to force the landlords to evict their Section 8 tenants, all of whom are African-American.

Soon, Anne Omura arrived with her husband Whitty, and warm cheers arose from the group of friends that cherished the moment as the excitement of the evening grew. Some red wine and plates of delicious food were quickly passed around as the gentle smiles of warmth and friendship were plentiful throughout the evening. Ira Jacobowitz, one of the founders of the EDC, excitedly gave a brief history of how the EDC came about and he focused on how dedicated Anne Omura has been to the cause during the past seven years while she has been the director of the EDC.
Attorney John Murcko helped to organize the celebration, and proudly was the one to offer Anne Omura a beautiful Community Service Award on behalf of the East Bay Tenants Bar Association which said; To Anne Tamiko Omura, Director of the Eviction Defense Center, For Outstanding Representation of Tenants in Alameda and Contra Costa County.
A toast of cheers arose as a smiling Anne Omura graciously accepted the service award as she warmly gazed upon the crowd of friends and co-workers during that precious moment as they recognized her hard work and dedication in keeping the EDC on track in it's defense of those in need. A truely wonderful moment of the spirit of humanity.

Oakland Ca--On March 15, the day before the vote for the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance (NEO) is to take place at Oakland City Hall, hysterical Oakland Officials pulled a fast one and served an Eviction Notice intended to displace at least 30 residents of St. Patricks Abbey Housing Program at 3700 E. 12th Street, in East Oakland.
Father Donald Weeks of the Abbey stated that he believes that the mass eviction was a political move by Oakland Officials attempting to chase away a former prison inmate by name of Carey Verse who has been labeled as a sexual predator. Verse only days ago moved into the Abbey. Weeks expressed anger that the recent mob assault at the St. Patricks Abbey Housing Program whipped up by City Officials had also resulted in someone snipping their phone lines and cutting off their communications with the outside world.

A Case Of Poor Judgement

The fact that 2,500 people recently signed a petition in opposition to a local judge, it clearly appears to demonstrate that free speech is alive and well in Oakland. No matter how hard the so-called ruling class tries to frighten people into silence or ignore their demands, the people figure out another way to resist the corrupting influences of the corporate empire which is dominating the political process against the the best wishes of the will of the people in this great nation.
On October 15 2003, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Harry R. Sheppard wrapped up a five page letter proclaiming that Judge James Richman is not biased against tenants, and soon had copies rushed off to Judge Richman, Assistant Presiding Judge Barbara Miller, Oakland Committee For Judicial Fairness, Eviction Defense Center, Oakland Tenants Union, and pro-tenant attorney John Murcko.
The letter was in response to a petition signed by 2,500 people requesting the transfer of Judge Richman out of law and motion because they believed that the Judge has been biased in favor of landlords during landlord/tenant cases. The petition was delivered to Judge Sheppard on August 20, 2003 after a coalition of tenants, activists, and attorneys held a press conference in front of the Alameda County Courthouse.

On Wednesday morning August 20 2003, a coalition of tenants, activists, and attorney's held a press conference in front of the Alameda County Courthouse to say that they want Alameda County Superior Court Judge James Richman transferred out of Department 31.
The coalition immediately turned in a petition containing more than 2,500 signatures from renters and activists that want the judge removed, and presented the petition/signatures to Presiding Judge Harry Sheppard of Department 1, in the County Courthouse. Judge Sheppard stated that he will review the matter.
Activists charge that Judge Richman is the only judge that generally hears north county law and motion, and that the tenants day in court is often denied them because Judge Richman is biased in favor of the landlords.

The artists and residents of the Alice Arts Center charge that; last year alone, Mayor Jerry Brown spent $1.5 million of taxpayer dollars to renovate the basement of the Alice Arts Center to create a home for his private charter school known as the School for the Arts at the expense of the artists and residents already occupying the same location.
The Mayor is the chair person of the School for the Arts, and had many different locations to choose from in Oakland to set up his charter school in. After years of hard work by local artists making a huge success out of the Alice Arts Center, the Mayor decided to flex his muscle and he placed his own school into the heart of all the existing programs now being disrupted at the center.

Chinatown Evictions Disrupting Elderly Community

Oakland CA-Mass evictions occuring in Oaklands Chinatown have disrupted the lives of an elderly community of retired residents at the Pacific Renaissance Plaza, many of whom are disabled and feeling traumatized by the 90 Day Eviction Notice's.
On April 16 2003, eviction notices were handed out to the elderly tenants of 50 rental units of affordable housing near 9th and Webster streets downtown Oakland. The tenants were given until July 31, 2003 to vacate the premises or face unlawful detainer law suits. The housing units occupied by the evictee's are slated to be renovated and sold off as market-rate condos after the evictions take place.

Oakland CA--In a show of force to challenge Forest City Enterprises and the proposed Uptown Project of Mayor Jerry Brown, nearly 47 people filled out speaker cards for the May 6, 2003 Oakland City Council Meeting to line up in support of the Coalition for Work Force Housing plans to build affordable housing. No Representatives of Forest City Enterprises were on hand to answer any questions posed by the speakers or Council Members as the evening wore on.
As a result of the evenings speakers efforts to sway the council vote, the City of Oakland will continue in it's efforts to negotiate with Forest City Enterprises over the proposed Uptown Project and the council will focus on aspects of the affordable housing proposals by the Coalition for Work Force Housing, a proposed condo lot, and the proposed housing for UC Berkeley students.
Starting out with Lynette Lee of the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation, speaker after speaker imploringly sought the councils support as they expressed their passion over this issue. In an attempt to convince the council members to get a grip on this Uptown Project, each speaker supported efforts to stretch what may be a $60 million subsidy to the developer as far as possible by including the plan of the Coalition for Work Force Housing into passage of the final deal.
Homeless people showed up to speak out, as well as Michael Diehl of B.O.S.S., who was wearing a lovely black Top Hat sporting a white feather neatly tucked into it's band, along with Alex Salazar of Pyatok Associates, Adam Gold of Just Cause Oakland, Sean Herron of the East Bay Housing Organizations, and many others.
Their message was on target, very focused and most speakers Tuesday night did not specificaly support or reject the Uptown Project as is, but remained focused in getting out their message of support for the Coalition for Work Force Housing plans to be incorporated into the final passage of the Uptown Project master plan.

In a $650,000 stunt that raised the eyebrows of local residents and the media, Oakland's Mayor Jerry Brown got caught up into the crossfire of protester's during a choreographed staged event to highlight the re-lighting of the Oakland Fox Theater marquee and blade sign for a November 29th event downtown Oakland. Oakland spent over $650,000 on the theater sign despite budget shortfalls. Numerous political celebrities, and their backers were being featured as speakers, along with musicians, a choir, and the whole gang was dressed in 1920’s period costume. All were here to celebrate the spending of $650,000 for a sign of the times, and the event was MC’d by Dennis Richmond who shook hands with the demonstrators before they disrupted the rest of that evenings affair.

Oakland CA-Father Donald Weeks of St. Patrick's Abbey was arraigned at 2pm today at Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland on 24 counts of child molestation between the years of 1994 through 1996. Weeks is scheduled for another court appearance for 11am on April 7.
Weeks was transferred from Kaiser Hospital to Alameda County Santa Rita Jail after having 2 heart attacks since his arrest last Tuesday March 30, by the Oakland Police Department (OPD).
There was no mention of any charges being pressed against Weeks for possession of crack cocaine or a crack pipe, despite the original allegations made by the OPD.

Weeks is being charged with unlawful sexual activities and sexual assualt.
After a surprise 11am raid upon St. Patricks Abbey, Lt. Yowell threw the book at Weeks and claimed that they found some pornographic videos and what appeared to be suspected narcotics at St. Patricks Abbey.
Weeks who is in his mid 60's and suffers from diabetes was hospitalized at Oakland's Highland Hospital shortly after being charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of unlawful sexual activitity which allegedly occurred 8 years ago or more with a male minor.

Deputy Attorney General sued by his tenants for
retaliatory lock-out and defective conditions!
Tenants from three units were locked out of their apartments by their landlord, Jerry Curtis, a California Deputy Attorney General after their Oakland Apartments flood with rainwater! Most of their possessions were lost as a result of the water damage from a defective roof that needed repairs. The roof was partially blown off by the wind, and the rainstorm followed. The lock-out occured after the three victims interviews of desperation were aired in a local televised news cast, and the lock-out was deemed as retaliatory. The tenants now fight back!

Without offering the tenants any due process to defend theirselves from unfair evictions, whole buildings of renters are being tossed out upon the streets of Oakland at the whim of his highness, Mayor Jerry Brown.

Oakland CA-With the handicapped having more than enough setbacks and troubles in life while just trying to keep a roof over their head or receiving decent medical treatment, the citizens of Oakland were outraged to see one of the newest Councilmembers publicly attack a planned housing project meant for the physically disabled.
About 48 determined speakers showed up at the May 6, 2003, televised City Council Meeting to voice their support for the Eastmont Court housing project meant for the physically disabled. After learning that the project was being opposed and placed in jeopardy by Councilwoman Desley Brooks of District 6, who has spearheaded a vicious campaign against the project while using tax dollars and city stationary in her efforts to kill the project, the housing activists showed up at City Hall in defense of the disabled who were under attack.

In Oakland, a land of intolerance, it's not safe to be a good samaritin and the latest attacks against a Christian Abbey by Oakland City Officials has become the focus of national media attention, and in it's own surreal way seems Kafkaesque.
On March 15, the day before the vote for the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance (NEO) took place at Oakland City Hall, hysterical Oakland Officials pulled a fast one and served an Eviction Notice intended to displace at least 26 to 30 residents of St. Patrick's Abbey Housing Program, in East Oakland.
The founder of the Abbey, Father Donald Weeks, believes that the mass eviction order was a political move by Oakland Officials who were attempting to chase away one former prison inmate by name of Cary Verse who has been labeled as a violent sexual predator and was recently released from prison after serving 12 years.

Oakland – "Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs
bite." Some Oakland tenants have learned this is more
than mere folklore.
"I’ve heard the old saying about bed bugs since I was
a child, but I never knew they were real until moving
here," said 47-year-old Frank Benavidez. "The bed bugs
are drinking my blood and eating me alive."
On Tuesday, Aug. 2, 43 residential tenants of the
historic landmark California Hotel in Oakland filed a
lawsuit at the Alameda County Superior Court House
against Oakland Community Housing Inc. (OCHI), a
nonprofit housing developer.

Oakland -- Large Oakland developer (East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation/EBALDC) pressures renters to sign up for a federal subsidized program, as a way to seek free building renovations for their properties. EBALDC owns around 1,000 rental units in numerous properties in Oakland, and elsewhere.
On Friday afternoon October 8, 2010, the tenants at 829 E. 19th St., were ordered by EBALDC to fill out an application for the Weatherization Assistance Program that was slipped under their doors by the building manager. A packet of forms slipped under the renters doors including a cover sheet from the developer giving the orders to fill out the forms, shocked the renters throughout the building.

Big victory for California Hotel tenants

Oakland - In a huge victory for the tenants of the California Hotel, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Richard Keller ruled on Oct. 29 to keep in place a temporary restraining order against Oakland Community Housing Inc. (OCHI), stopping the corrupt nonprofit housing developer from evicting the tenants or shutting off the gas, water and electricity at the historic hotel they reside in.
According to attorney John Murcko, “The judge appointed Anne Omura of the Eviction Defense Center as a trustee to operate the California Hotel for the court, with full powers to hire a management company to manage the hotel. Ms. Omura will be allowed to rent out all 150 rooms at the California Hotel, so that there will be enough of an income coming in to properly manage and maintain the building for the current 52 low-income renters still residing there after refusing to move when threatened with eviction.
“The tenants prevailed. There was no one from Oakland Community Housing appearing in court today to oppose the tenants’ needs or Judge Richard Keller’s ruling. This is a big victory for the people,” said Murcko.

California Hotel Tenants File $53 Million Claim

On Wednesday August 6, a claim for $53 million was filed against the City of Oakland, by 53 residents of the California Hotel who believe that some city officials may have been involved in a scheme to violate their rights. Under the regulatory agreement between California’s Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC), Oakland Community Housing, Inc. (OCHI), and CaHon Associates, the regulatory agreement involving low-cost loans provided that OCHI agreed to provide low-income housing to the tenants of the California Hotel for a 30 year period. The TCAC agreement has recently been violated after OCHI and some city officials moved to force the existing residents out of the old historic hotel, and threatened to cut off the water, gas and electricity to the premises.

Temporary Victory For Residents of The California Hotel

At around 4:30 pm on July 30th, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Keller handed a victory to the residents of the historic California Hotel by granting them another 30 days before ruling on whether or not they may continue to reside in their housing. A Temporary Restraining Order that went into effect a few weeks ago to stop the owners of the California Hotel from shutting off the gas, water and electricity will continue to remain in effect at least until August 27, when the next hearing will occur to decide the fate of the poor, elderly and disabled residents of the California Hotel.

On August 6, 53 residents of the California Hotel filed a $53 million claim against the City of Oakland - believing that some city officials may have been involved in a scheme to violate their rights.
John Murcko, the attorney representing the residents of the hotel believes that Oakland's Community & Economic Development Agency (CEDA) employees Sean Rogan and Marge Gladman directed the John Stewart Company and their employee Laura Sanborn to stop leasing units at the California Hotel, after tenants moved out beginning June 2007. Murcko believes that Sanborn did what she was told, who's actions thus resulted in an economic crisis at the hotel, with Sean Rogan following through with a scheme to try and buy the tenants out after the staged crisis took effect.

Oakland -- On Monday September 28, at 6:00 p.m., there will be a hearing at the Oakland Housing Authority in the commissioners meeting room that is designed to assist in the further taking of Oakland's public housing units from the poor, through the promotion of the proposed LHAP (program) being discussed to facilitate the disposition of over 1,600 public housing units, from Oakland's poor.
Terri (real person) is a middle aged poor black homeless woman on General Assistance, who was lucky enough to find a one bedroom public housing unit on Kirkham St., in West Oakland, for only $61.00 per month for rent, including the security deposit.
After waiting for two years on Oakland's public housing waiting list, Terri was notified during the past week by the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) that a one bedroom apartment became available for her.
With no other means of support other than General Assistance (GA) which only aids indigent adults with a maximum cash grant of $336.00 per month in Alameda County, Terri feels extremely grateful that public housing exists to help people like her to get off the streets, and into some housing of their own.

On July 20, 2004 people organized by the Campaign for Renters Rights held a victory rally outside Alameda City Hall after Alameda Housing Authority Director Michael Pucci managed to persuade HUD to fork over $630,000 that it owed to restore funding for 108 families that had their housing vouchers terminated due to the Section 8 crisis created by HUD.

Oakland - The disposition plan for over 1,600 public housing units owned and operated by the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA), signals the end of public housing as we know it if other Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) follow suit and switch to the Section 8 model being promoted by the OHA for it's public housing program.
In a nut shell, the OHA wants to determine which of it's small scattered public housing sites that are occupied with very low-income households, will be sold off, so that the proceeds can be used to build much larger mixed income housing projects for higher income residents, like the Hope Vl mixed income housing projects that have displaced the poor all across the nation.

SECTION 8 IN OAKLAND
Editors, Daily Planet:
Will the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) have to raise the rents on all Section 8 tenants in Oakland once they start using Section 8 vouchers to fund public housing? The Oakland Tribune mentions that Oakland will use Section 8 vouchers for funding public housing, but does not mention if HUD has increased the budget for Oakland’s Section 8 voucher program.
The Oakland Tribune also fails to address how tenants in Oakland’s Section 8 voucher program waiting list will be affected by the proposals to give Section 8 vouchers to public housing tenants. Will those on the waiting list have to wait longer as a result, to receive a Section 8 voucher?
Once the OHA starts using Section 8 vouchers to fund Oakland’s public housing program while there is still a major funding shortfall occurring in the Section 8 voucher program in 15 percent of the nation’s Public Housing Authorities, will the Oakland Housing Authority have to raise the rents on all other Section 8 tenants, because of the proposals to divert Section 8 funding to public housing?
The Tribune article raises more questions than it answers.

Big victory for California Hotel tenants

Oakland - In a huge victory for the tenants of the California Hotel, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Richard Keller ruled on Oct. 29 to keep in place a temporary restraining order against Oakland Community Housing Inc. (OCHI), stopping the corrupt nonprofit housing developer from evicting the tenants or shutting off the gas, water and electricity at the historic hotel they reside in.

On early Saturday morning January 14, 2012, ex-Marine, Itzcoatl Ocampo, age 23, was booked in the Anaheim jail as a suspect in the recent cold blooded stabbing killings of four homeless people, that have occurred since December, 20, 2011.

Oakland -- To the relief and the horror of the homeless community in Orange County and throughout California, on early Saturday morning January 14, 2012, Itzcoatl Ocampo, of Yorba Linda, California, was booked in the Anaheim jail as a suspect in the recent cold blooded stabbing killings of four homeless people, that have occurred since December, 20, 2011.
The recent spate of killings have terrorized the homeless population nearby, and throughout the state. As the blood of the homeless people flowed onto the wealthy streets of Orange County during nearly the past month, the homeless persons on the streets wondered if they were going to be next to die at the hands of the serial killer.

Oakland tenants harassed over $2.5 million renovation scheme

Oakland -- On July 7, 2011 the tenants at 829 E. 19th St., had their water shut off for hours after contractors finally began work on a $2.5 million renovation scheme meant to enrich the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) by as much $105,000 or more, just in developers fees alone.
The $2.5 million massive renovation scheme that threatens tenants with displacement is known as the Effie's House Project, and EBALDC is one of Oakland's largest non profit housing developers with well over 1,000 residential rental units.

Oakland Ca-Rumors regarding the imminent closure of the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center's Pain Clinic became a nightmarish reality for a thousand patients before they ever knew what had just hit them.
In a terse June 10, 2002 letter signed by Warren Kirk, President and CEO of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, patients started to one by one be notified about the official closure of the Pain Management Service at Summit Medical Center as of July 15, 2002. Some patients have not been notified about the pain clinic closure until as recent as a week ago claim some of the patients.
Nearly a third of the patients are known as Pump Patients and need to receive refills of medication in 28 day cycles, and some need refills every three weeks due to higher more frequent doses of medication such as morphine.
