I read now in the Internet the following news:
American soldiers see war as work and career
http://ultimosegundo.ig.com.br/mundo/nyt/soldados+americanos+veem+guerra+como+trabalho+e+carreira/n1237757755355.html
When is it that the Brazilian journalists will begin wondering if the banal evil practiced by the professional American soldiers is or no more dangerous than the evil practiced because of the patriotism? All the Nazi judged in Nuremberg, ALL WITHOUT EXCEPTION, alleged that they were accomplishing his work when they committed war crimes. Hannah Arendt analyzed this phenomenon of the "war work" very well in EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM. They are words of her:
"The extermination machine had been drifted and improved a lot in all the details before the horror of the war to reach own Germany, and his complex bureaucracy worked with the impassive same precision so much in the years of easy victory as in those of previsible defeat. In the beginning, when the people could have still some conscience, they hardly happened desertions between the ruling elite and the superior commanders of SS; those defections were made to notice only when it was evident that Germany will lose the war."
Arendt speaks about the banality of the evil. Does the evil become still more banal when it is practiced as American profession and does the press announce this as if it was a thing absolutely natural and desirable?
