The Alliance-Philippines Calls to FREE Aung San Suu Kyi! FREE BURMA!
Los Angeles --The AJLPP as a part of the US based Free Burma Coalition in Los Angeles urged all freedom loving people of the world to step up pressure on Burma to free Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners so they could participate in this year’s election.
“Make Aung San Suu Kyi’s 65th birthday her happiest ever by setting her free. She has been imprisoned for 15 years by the military junta who killed his father and now made her a prisoner for almost 15 years.” The AJLPP added.
Burma’s foremost political prisoner
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in detention for almost 15 years, is expected to spend a quiet day at her lakeside mansion where she is kept without telephone or Internet access, cut off from the outside world.
She is the daughter of Burma’s national hero, Army Col. Aung San who is considered the father of Burma’s Independence from Birtain in 1947. Aung San Suu Kyi is the third child and the only daughter of Col Aung San.
Born on June 19, 1945, Suu Kyi is Burma’s most high-profile political prisoner. Like South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, she has become an international symbol of heroic and peaceful resistance in the face of oppression. Mandela was imprisoned by Apartheid rulers of South Africa for 25 years.
Suu Kyi’s soft voice and demeanor belie her status as the biggest threat to the ruling junta ahead of elections planned for sometime this year.
Her party won the last vote in 1990 but was never allowed to take office, and she is barred from standing in the upcoming polls—the country’s first in two decades. The military junta suppressed the people’s movement and imprisoned Aug San in 1990.
